Fresh from victory against Acton last week to give Flint Mountain a four point lead over their title rivals, the league leaders took a break from league action as focus shifted to the first round of the inaugural Mike Beech Memorial Trophy. The Mountain were drawn against Caerwys, who locked horns with the Mountain earlier in the month, with Flint Mountain winning 4-0. Manager Rob Marshall give a debut to new signing David Walkiewicz, who arrived from Holywell Town earlier in the week, whilst there were also starts for Liam Mortimer and Alex Millington.
The first half had barely started when Flint Mountain had an early chance, but Jon Edmonds' low shot clipped the bottom of the post. Caerwys quickly found their feet and pressed for an opener themselves, and took the lead after seventeen minutes. Kirk Russell, come out to clear the ball from his penalty area, but the Caerwys player reached the ball before him, and was able to run the ball into the empty net. Later in the half, Jack Aitken saw a volleyed effort on the turn cannon off the crossbar to deny an equaliser.
At half time, Alex Millington made way for Rob Rush, with Liam Mortimer moving into midfield, and it was the substitute who was instrumental in levelling the score. Picking up the ball on the right, Rush drove into the area and delivered a low cross towards the back post, where Jack Aitken controlled the ball and stabbed the ball into the net.
Caerwys had a chance of their own to equalise only find the crossbar from a curling strike, before they made their job a harder with their captain being sent off for a second bookable offence. Flint Mountain used this to their advantage as they laid siege to the Caerwys goal in the final fifteen minutes of the game. Jon Edmonds saw a shot well saved by the Caerwys goalkeeper, but was not to be denied a goal with five minutes of the game left. Sean Williams did well in the penalty area, surrounded by Caerwys defenders and was able to find a pass to Edmonds, who smashed the ball into the net and secure the win for the away side.
Next up, Flint Mountain return to league action and face a trip to Penyffordd to take on Penyffordd Lions. The Lions got the better of the league games last season, but have an indifferent start and lie in mid-table. Nevertheless, The Mountain will have to be on their guard as they look to extend their lead in the North East Wales League.
