After enduring more postponements due to the winter weather, Flint Mountain were finally glad to get back to playing football, where they welcomed Offa Athletic in the rearranged Horace Wynne Cup quarter final. Offa had the form coming in the game, having beaten Flint Mountain on the last seven occasions, including three times this season. Injuries and personal commitments meant that manager Rob Marshall was forced to reshuffle the sides, with the likes of Jake Williams, Joey Davies, David James Jones and top goal scorer Jack Aitken all missing, amongst others.
The game started evenly, as both teams jostled to get ahead. Offa had an early chance, when an Offa player at the back post was ruled onside, but his low effort was saved by Mountain goalkeeper Ryan Roberts. The pace of Mountain forwards Dylan Roberts and Mark Hughes was causing problems for the Offa defence, but neither side could find any clear cut chances. The breakthrough come five minutes before the half. Facing a long, high ball into the penalty area, the Offa defender's clearing header fell straight to Sean Wilkes, whose first time effort found the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. the score then remained the same into half time.
in the second half, Offa started the brighter team and got back into the tie after ten minutes of the half. Getting in at the back post, the Offa midfielder was unmarked, leaving him the chance to fire home, which he duly took. Shortly afterwards, Flint Mountain were forced into a change due to injury, as Alex Millington was replaced by Modestas Krukonis.
Krukonis was straight into the action, and earned a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, after a driving run towards goal. Keiran Farr stepped up with the free kick, but his effort was initially blocked by the wall. The ball, however, rebounded to left back Dylan Evans twelve yards out, who spun and rifled a shot on goal, which give the Offa goalkeeper no chance.
Both teams pressed for further goals, with Offa restricted to longer range efforts which were well saved by Ryan Roberts. At the other end, Mark Hughes and Modestas Krukonis both had chances to wrap up the game, but for good defending by Offa on both occasions. In the end, the game could have gone either way, as Mountain held on to secure passage into the semi finals.
Next up for Flint Mountain is league action, where the visitors to the Northop Hall Pavilion are Penyffordd Lions. The sides have met once so far this season, in the Premier Cup, where Flint Mountain triumphed 4-3 after extra time.
