With yet more more postponements bringing misery to the football calendar, Flint Mountain were thankful to be back playing, where they made the short journey to Mold to take on Mold Town United in the Premier Cup second round. Manager Rob Marshall made a couple of changes from the previous defeat to Penyffordd Lions, as David James Jones, Liam Mortimer, Sean Wilkes and Karl Griffiths all returned to the starting line up. There was also space for Marc Gunther and Jimmy McGlone on the substitutes' bench, after both recently re-signing for the club.
The first half was a drab affair, with both sides struggling in the wintry conditions. Neither side could seem to force an opener early on, but Flint Mountain opened the scoring on the half hour mark. Finding the ball at his feet, Jack Aitken turned and fired a low, tame effort towards goal. The Mold goalkeeper saved with his feet, but the ball rebounded to David James Jones, who fired home first time to score his second goal in as many games. Flint Mountain then had Ryan Roberts to thank, as he made a low save to save a Mold player who was through on goal.
In the second half, Mold found an opening early in the half and got an equaliser, with the player finding the net after he was allowed space. Mold could have took the lead shortly afterwards, but Ryan Roberts was again on hand to make a low save. Flint Mountain looked to get themselves back in front, but their efforts were thwarted by a stubborn Mold defence. The final breakthrough, however, come with just four minutes of the game remaining. From a Mold goal kick, Karl Griffiths rose high to head the ball back towards the Mold goal. The ball skipped through to the goalkeeper, who somehow missed the ball completely, and Sean Wilkes then had the easy task of tapping into an empty net.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a reverse league fixture with Penyffordd Lions. The sides have met twice this season, in cup and league, with both sides picking up a win apiece. The game is surely to be another good clash.
