After Flint Mountain returned to winning ways last weekend against Halkyn United, focus turned to the opening round of the Horace Wynne Cup this weekend and the visit of Mostyn Dragons to Wat's Dyke Way. The two sides met back in September, with Flint Mountain running out 4-1 winners. Last weekend's win did come at a cost, as Ryan Worall was ruled out with an injury, so George Jones replaced him in the starting line up. There were also places in the starting line up for Lewis Evans, Sean Evans, Dylan Roberts and Christian Davis, making his first start for the club after his recent move from Mold Town United. Davis was pushed into a striking partnership with Jimmy McGlone, in order to provide a different dimension to the attack.
It was Mostyn who enjoyed most of the early play, but despite Flint Mountain struggling with the low winter sunlight, they failed to produce any meaningful attack on goal. With Richie Hughe's tireless running and effort in the centre, Flint Mountain made them pay as Jimmy McGlone opened the scoring just after the half hour mark. McGlone needed two bites of the cherry to find the net, as he found the net with a scrappy effort inside the penalty area. Just five minutes later, the lead was doubled as Dylan Roberts scored his first goal for the club. As a cross come in from the right hand side, Roberts expertly hit a side foot volley into the top corner from twenty yards, much to the delight of his team mates.
At half time, manager Rob Thelwell made a substitution, as Lewis Evans made way for Lee Messham on the right wing. Flint Mountain looked to continue where they left off in the first half, and in the fifty third minute, they extended their lead thanks to an own goal. As left back Shane Owens bombed down the wing, he delivered a hard flat cross, which flew across the penalty area, only to be turned into his own net by the Mostyn left back, as Lee Messham laid in wait to tap the ball home.
The Flint Mountain domination of the second half continued and Jimmy McGlone took full advantage by adding a fourth Mountain game shortly afterwards. At this point, Scott Forrester and Rob Rush were introduced to the action, as they replaced Shane Owens and Dylan Roberts. Rush was instrumental in Flint Mountain's fifth goal, as his driving run forced him to be taken down, before Jimmy McGlone wrapped up his hat trick. With eight minutes remaining, midfielder Sean Evans wrapped up the win from a free kick. With the ball lofted into the area, it was missed by everyone, but dropped into the net at the far post.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a quarter final clash in the Queensferry Sports President's Cup, where they welcome Offa Athletic to Wat's Dyke Way. Offa recently visited and left with a 4-3 win in the North East Wales League, helped by a poor Flint Mountain performance that afternoon.
