More Cup Nightmares for Mountain

Despite regaining some pride in this game, Flint Mountain exit the Premier Cup at the first attempt

After the dismal display last week in the league against Ewloe Spartans, Flint Mountain were once again paired against GAP Connah's Quay Reserves, this time in the Premier Cup. Mountain kept a familiar style to the last game, but made two changes to the side. The returning Rob Rush moved into central defence, allowing Scott Forrester to move into midfield in place of the unavailable Lewis Powell. Also returning was Ryan Jones, who made a straight swap with Tom Smith. After not gaining any joy in recent games against GAP, Mountain looked to absorb the pressure more from an energetic Nomads side and hit them on the break.

In the first half, a long ball from Shane Owens down the left found winger Chris Layne. Layne outpaced the fullback, only to see his shot parried away at the near post by the GAP goalkeeper for a corner. From the resulting corner, Lee Messham had a chance from a tight angle at the far post that was scrambled away by the keeper. The majority of the half was relatively quiet for both goalkeepers, with GAP happy to dominate possession whilst the Mountain midfield of Scott Forrester, Craig Jones and Alex Millington provided excellent protection through the middle. This limited GAP to long balls, which were well dealt with by both Ian Wynne and Rob Rush in the Mountain defence. Against the run of play, GAP managed to find the only goal of the half with ten minutes to go. A free kick almost in the corner quadrant was delivered brilliantly by GAP. Mountain failed to offer enough of a challenge at the near post and the ball was met with a thumping header high to Ricky Bennett's left corner.

In the second half, Mountain came out looking to dominate, in much the same way as the first half. Unfortunately, Ian Wynne, who had been struggling all game with a knee injury was forced to withdraw and was replaced by Adam Roscoe. This change saw Roscoe take his place in the midfield and Scott Forrester moved into the defence alongside Rob Rush. Shortly afterwards, GAP grabbed a goal in controversial circumstances. With the ball bobbling in the centre of the park, Mountain captain Craig Jones attempted to make the interception only for the referee to stop the play for a free kick against Mountain. The referee failed to make either side aware of who the free kick was for and even appeared to reverse the decision at one point. Nevertheless, Mountain failed to set up correctly for the free kick which was delivered from deep to the back post. At the back post, the GAP player had the time and space to drive his header across goal and into the top left hand corner. Despite Mountain protestations, it was another soft goal conceded with more disappointing marking. Having given his all in the middle of the park, captain Craig Jones was forced with withdraw from proceedings with twenty five minutes to go. Mountain's player/manager Stuart Buxton replaced Jones with Forrester again moving into central midfield.

With Mountain two goals down, the game really opened up as they pressed for a goal to get them back into the game. The extra space allowed Layne and Messham the opportunity to drive at the GAP fullbacks and with ten minutes remaining, Mountain got a vital goal. Lee Messham delivered a long, high hanging ball into the GAP penalty area. The ball was met by a leaping Chris Layne who headed Mountain back into contention, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. Mountain continued to press, Messham again with a quality delivery towards lone striker Keiron Moore. Moore attempted an audacious scissor kick, but could not find the net. With minutes to go, Mountain had their last opportunity to send the game into extra time. Another corner was delivered into the GAP penalty area, only for Alex Millington to struggle to get to grips with the chance and see his effort trickle harmlessly wide, as the final whistle blew.

Next up for Flint Mountain is the visit to Rhydymwyn of Acton FC, with Mountain looking to finally end this winless run.
