After suffering further disappointment of another cup final clash being postponed due to the weather, Flint Mountain were ready to start their Clwyd Cup adventure for the first time. This tie was a direct result of an impressive third place league finish this season. The opponents today were Conwy Legion United, who finished as runners up in the Vale of Clwyd League, the sister league to the North East Wales League where Flint Mountain ply their trade. Despite playing on a Saturday for the first time in several weeks, Flint Mountain were again down to the bare bones and were faced with playing another game with a bare eleven players. Only one change was required from the previous game against Cefn Albion, as Tom Allen made only his second appearance of the season, replacing Sean Wilkes.
Flint Mountain suffered a nightmare start to the game, as Conwy grabbed the opening goal within the first minute. Conwy broke down the left hand side, beating several players before scoring. Things went from bad to worse, as Conwy were able to get another goal after just ten minutes gone. At that point, Mountain were able to get into the game, but were limited to only preventing further goals from being scored. After half an hour, midfielder Josh Griffiths was again forced off the pitch through injury. With no substitutes available, Mountain were forced to play the rest of the game with only ten men. With another goal following shortly afterwards, Mountain left the field at half time feeling very deflated.
Despite having the odds stacked against them, the remaining ten men looked to finish the second half with no pressure. After another Conwy goal almost certainly killing off the Mountain challenge, Mountain did finally grab a consolation goal with twenty minutes to play. From a corner, Craig Jones delvered the ball right onto the head of Mountain striker Richie Hughes, who connected well and sent the ball into the top corner. Conwy were not done though, and got themselves their fifth and final goal just before the end of the game.
Next up for Flint Mountain is their final game of the season, as they take on Cefn Albion in the rearranged NEWFA Horace Wynne Cup final. Mountain will be looking for revenge after back to back defeats against the league champions earlier in the month, including defeat in the Queensferry Sports President's Cup final.
