Mountain Fall Short In Final

Robert Moore29 Apr 2015 - 21:52

Despite a brave and valiant effort, Flint Mountain are defeated in the President's Cup Final by Cefn Albion

Confidence was high heading into this game, the club's first final in 3 years and the first of two scheduled finals against title chasing Cefn Albion. Once again, Flint Mountain were forced into changes to their starting line up. Midfielder Craig Jones was on holiday and striker Sean Wilkes was cup tied so Lewis Powell and Tom Smith were able to replace them.

Cefn started the game brightly but Flint Mountain left back Rob Rush made a tough challenge to show their intent. Cefn were almost ahead just a few minutes into the game. From a free kick, the ball was swung into the Mountain penalty area. A player managed to his head to the ball and the ball struck the bottom of the post. It didn't take too much longer though, as after 13 minutes, Cefn did take the lead. After a break forward was seemingly stopped, the ball broke to a Cefn player on the edge of the box. After passing to another player, he was able to fire an effort which looped over Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett and into the top corner of the goal.

Despite the goal, the Mountain players were unfazed and began to get into the game. When Cefn's goalkeeper was caught outside of his goal, left winger Keiron Moore had the perfect opportunity to level the game. However, his tame effort was blocked by a retreating Cefn defender before it could cross the line. Moore was not to be denied a first half goal and with 37 minutes gone, he grabbed the Flint Mountain equaliser. Bursting forward, the ball was played to Chris Layne, who turned and played a ball through the Cefn defence and to Moore, who placed the ball past the Cefn goalkeeper and into the net.

Cefn were forced to clear their lines several times before the referee blew up for half time and must have been glad to hear the half time whistle. As the second half began, Cefn made two changes, highlighting the pressure they were under in the first half. Those changes helped and it was again Cefn who began the half better and grabbed their second goal just a few minutes into the half. Cefn broke down the right hand side and into the corner. The Cefn striker was able to work his way past several Mountain players without a suitable tackle being made before smashing the ball across Bennett and into the far bottom corner. Cefn were now in control of the midfield battle and soon after, they made it 3-1. Cefn again broke down the right and crossed into the penalty area. On hand was right back Leon Pickford to clear for Mountain, but at the decisive moment, he slipped, allowing the Cefn striker to have a clean strike on goal. Bennett was able to get a hand on the ball but was unable to keep the ball out.

Mountain continued to battle and their pressure paid off as the referee then awarded them a penalty. As a Cefn defender attempted to clear, the ball fell onto his arm. Keiron Moore was the man to take the penalty and he confidently stepped up and slotted the ball to the goalkeeper's left, sending him the wrong way in the process. Flint Mountain would have hoped to have built upon that goal, but Cefn quickly re-established their two goal lead. With a long ball over the top of the Mountain defence, Tom Smith was left in a foot race chasing the ball. Smith called for goalkeeper Bennett to come and clear the ball but Bennett stayed on his line. Smith then lost the ball and the striker was able to put the ball past Bennett and into the Mountain net.

That goal seemed to have deflated the Mountain players but they continued to work hard and battle. Mountain then made some quick substitutions to try and change their fortunes. Coming on for them were Danny Griffiths, Ryan Jones and Adam Humphreys, in place of Alex Millington, Josh Griffiths and Mountain's goalscorer, Keiron Moore. The changes, whilst providing fresh legs, were unable to stop a now confident Cefn team, as they killed off Mountain's challenge with their fifth goal. Mountain could not clear the ball in their own penalty area, and despite Bennett making a save to deny Cefn, the ball could only find find an unmarked Cefn player in the centre of the goal who tapped home.

With time running out in the game, Cefn claimed a sixth and final goal. From an in-swinging corner, a player got a touch and into the net and despite the protests from the Mountain players who were claiming a handball, the goal was given and Cefn went on to win the game and claim the Queensferry Sports President's Cup. Next up for Flint Mountain is their final league game of the season against today's opponents. The game will be a dead game for Mountain, as they are guaranteed to finish third in the table. For Cefn, however, a point against the Mountain will see them clinch the league at the first time of asking.
