Flint Mountain come into this semi final on the back of some impressive results, including a recent 6-0 win over their semi final opponents. Manager Stuart Buxton reverted back to the more familiar 4-5-1 formation that favours the Mountain side. Craig Jones retained his place in the defence but moved to left back, with Ryan Jones coming in at right back and Rob Rush moving to centre back in the absence of Tom Smith who missed the game through illness.
Mountain started the game with the possession but unable to get much going until the seventh minute when Danny Griffiths opened the scoring. The ball found it's way to Chris Layne who had drifted off his right wing to find space. Layne looked to take a shot at goal, but miss-hit the shot. However, Danny Griffiths kept himself onside and kept the wayward shot alive. He cut inside before firing past the helpless Aston goalkeeper into the top right corner.
The slick passing that Mountain have become accustomed to was not happening in the game, with sloppy play creeping into the game. After giving Aston chances which were spurned, Mountain were able to double their lead in the twenty eighth minute. Midfielder Lewis Powell and striker Rich Hughes combined well outside the Aston penalty area. Powell then found Hughes in the area as he slipped away from his marker and was able to score easily with a shot which actually broke the net!
After some hasty repairs to the net, reattaching it to the crossbar, Aston suddenly found some possession and took advantage of more poor Mountain play. Former Mountain striker Tom Jones seized upon the ball in the Mountain area and shot past Mountain keeper Ricky Bennett before he was able to reach the ball. Only a minute later, Aston should have been level. Confusion between players allowed Aston to spring into the Mountain half unchallenged. Goalkeeper Bennett was equal to the weak shot though and Mountain were able to breath a sigh of relief.
With time running out in the half, Mountain won a corner which was delivered by Lewis Powell. The ball towards the far post somehow evaded several players before falling onto the head of midfielder Keiron Moore, who headed home to give Mountain their two goal lead back as half time approached.
Into the second half, Mountain were still not improving their play but Aston were unable to capitalise. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Rich Hughes bagged his second of the game to kill off any chance of an Aston fightback. The goal come from another corner with Lewis Powell again providing the assist. Hughes lost his marker, giving himself a free header which he gladly took, burying the ball with the goalkeeper stranded.
Only a couple of minutes later, Mountain were forced into making two substitutions in quick succession. Firstly, Chris Layne complained of feeling unwell so was replaced by Leon Pickford, before Lewis Powell was replaced by Josh Griffiths after picking up a foot injury. The last half an hour proved to be less than entertaining as Mountain were able to hold their lead and secure their passage to the final of the President's Cup.
