After the disappointment of last week's postponed game against Aston FC, attention now turned to the Queensferry Sports President's Cup and another derby game against Flint Town United Reserves. Both league games had been very feisty games that finished as a draw. This quarter final clash would finally see a winner. Mountain kept consistency from their previous game with Connah's Quay Tigers with the same starting eleven. Mountain were also boosted by the return to the substitutes bench of Rob Rush and Adam Humphreys.
The match started with the same pace and enthusiasm that made the first two affairs so entertaining. Within the first minute, Flint Town had their first effort on goal. From a throw in, the striker moved inside and smashed an effort which cannoned off the crossbar. This early warning shot did nothing to affect Mountain as they quickly got their game going. Barely five minutes later, Mountain were ahead. The ball broke to Keiron Moore on the left hand side. He moved inside from his wing position and shot low. His effort was saved by the Flint goalkeeper but he could only parry it straight out. Following up was midfielder Lewis Powell and he gladly took the opportunity to fire home the rebound. The goal stirred up the Mountain side who immediately set out to claim a second goal.
The second did quickly follow in the fourteenth minute of the game. From a throw in on the right, the ball was played to right back Leon Pickford. Pickford controlled the ball before firing a volleyed cross into the penalty area. At the back post was striker Rich Hughes who also met the cross on the volley as the smashed the ball into the bottom corner. Flint were stunned by these quick fire goals and were struggling to find any rhythm.
After several strong tackles throughout the half, the tension finally come to a head with only three minutes of the half remaining. Winger Chris Layne got caught in a tangle of legs with a Flint player. The player kicked out at Layne, who in turn, retaliated. Another Flint player saw this action and ran over to Layne and also kicked him. The result of which saw a red card given to Layne and Flint player, whilst a yellow card was also given to Mountain substitute Rob Rush for encroaching on to the pitch.
The game managed to calm as the second half began and Mountain had an immediate chance to put the game to bed. Keiron Moore was fed the ball on the left. He beat the defender but could only fire his low effort straight at the Flint goalkeeper, who pushed the ball out for a corner.
Goal scorer Lewis Powell had managed to pick up an injury during the first half so with 30 minutes remaining, he was replaced by Danny Griffiths. Shortly afterwards, Adam Humphreys entered the fray to replace a tired looking Keiron Moore.
Flint tried to get themselves into the game as Mountain were thankful to their goalkeeper Ricky Bennett, who made a couple of very good saves. At full stretch he was able to push the ball away from goal. With time running out, Rob Rush returned to action from injury, replacing Rich Hughes. He almost got himself a quick goal, when from a corner, the ball fell to him only 12 yards out but his effort sailed over the bar.
Mountain thought they had managed a clean sheet, but Flint got a consolation goal in the dying moments. From another corner, Bennett was caught in no mans land as Flint headed home at the back post.
The win puts Mountain into a semi final clash with Aston FC. After the Christmas break, next up for Mountain is a game against Deeside Phoenix on 3rd January.
