Penalties Delight In President's Cup

Flint Mountain win the President's Cup after being taken to penalties by a stubborn Mold Town United

After moving one step closer to securing the league title last weekend with a resounding win over Airbus Academy, Flint Mountain turned their attentions to the first of four cup finals, with the challenge of Mold Town United in the Queensferry Sports President's Cup. The Mountain had won this competition before, coming closest in 2015 when they were beaten finalists. Mountain manager Rob Marshall made a couple of changes, restoring Kirk Russell, Mark Williams and Marc Gunther to the starting line-up, whilst Joey Davies, Alex Millington and Jimmy McGlone all dropped to the substitutes' bench.

The Mountain thought they had made the perfect start to the game, when the Mold goalkeeper did well to stop the ball on the line. Meanwhile, at the other end, Keiran Farr was on hand to clear the ball on the line from a Mold corner. Both teams were trying to find a way through the respective defences, but both held on throughout the half and it remained goalless at the break. In the second half, Pete Martin thought he had opened the scoring, after bundling the ball past the goalkeeper, only to be brought back for offside. There were also chances from Jon Edmonds and substitute Jimmy McGlone, but Mold held firm and forced the tie into extra time.

In extra time, Kirk Russell made a great save to deny Mold from close range, but again the offside flag was raised regardless. The Mountain were turning the screw and launched attack after attack on a weary Mold team, but once again they just could not find a way through, so the final was to be decided by the lottery of penalties. In the shootout, Mold went first, followed by Lee Messham, who levelled. With Mold's second penalty, Kirk Russell gussed correctly and made an outstanding save, somehow managing to push the ball over the crossbar. The Mountain capitalised, as further penalties from Jimmy McGlone, Mark Williams and Sean Williams took the shootout to the fifth penalties. Mold kept up the fight by scoring, before David Walkiewicz stepped up with Mountain's fifth. The winger held his nerve, confidently slotting the ball to the goalkeeper's right, securing the cup win.

Next week, the two sides face off again, this time at the Northop Hall Pavilion. For Mold, the game is a must win, as they look to keep their faint title hopes alive, whilst for the Mountain, three points will secure a first league title in the club's history. We hope to see you there!
