After seeing last week's top of the table league clash fall foul of the weather, attention again switched from league action to cup competition and the semi-final of the Horace Wynne Cup. The Mountain fell at this hurdle last season after coming unstuck against Penyffordd Lions, but with The Mountain despatching the holders in the last round, they looked forward to a tough game against Airbus UK Broughton Youth. The Young Wingmakers were looking to make a second final in two years, having beaten Flint Mountain last season on their way to Premier Cup glory. Mountain manager Rob Marshall largely stuck with the same side that beat Brymbo Victoria two weeks ago, but there were spaces for Ryan Roberts, Jake Williams and Jon Edmonds to return to the starting line-up.
The Mountain started strongly and immediately pressed for an opener. Jon Edmonds had the first real chance, but after beating his marker, his shot was straight at the Airbus goalkeeper. The home team also rattled the crossbar in an even half, until breaking the deadlock just before the half hour mark. With a cross swung into the box, the Airbus goalkeeper dropped the ball, under pressure from young Mountain striker Jack Aitken, with Aitken getting the final touch as the ball landed in the back of the Airbus goal.
That lead did not last long, however, as Airbus levelled the scores just eight minutes later. With the Mountain defence asking for offside, they stopped and allowed an Airbus player to run through clear on goal. He gathered a long ball forward, before firing a low shot which was well saved by the advancing Mountain goalkeeper Ryan Roberts. The ball fell back to the Airbus player, and under no pressure simply tapped the rebound into the empty net.
In the second half, captain Jake Williams made way for Jimmy McGlone, who returned to the team for the first time in two months. The striker made an immediate impact, giving Airbus another attacking threat to deal with, and it was the substitute who restored the lead just three minutes into the second half. Jon Edmonds did well on the right and delivered a cross, which found McGlone, but his shot was blocked. He managed to recover the ball and recycle it back out to Edmonds, who again crossed and found McGlone. This time, the Mountain striker's low shot found the bottom corner.
Airbus were under massive pressure after the second goal, and had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the tie, as he made a string of impressive saves to deny Jimmy McGlone, Jon Edmonds, Sean Williams and David Walkiewicz a third Mountain goal. The pressure did eventually pay off, as Mountain did get a third goal with thirteen minutes to go. A corner into the penalty area was not dealt with and the ball fell into the box to the feet of Jimmy McGlone. McGlone hit a low shot on the turn which found it's way through the crowd of players and into the back of the net. Despite Airbus' last ditch attempts late on, the Mountain held on to secure the win and passage into the final.
The win sees Flint Mountain face off against Connah's Quay Nomads U18s in the final of the Horace Wynne Cup, with details to be confirmed over the coming days. Next up, this fixture is reversed as Flint Mountain make the trip to the Hollingsworth Group Stadium to take on Airbus in the North East Wales League.
