Following on from the convincing league win over Bellevue last weekend, Flint Mountain looked to reach a third cup final, as they welcomed Brymbo Victoria to the Pavilion, in the semi-final of the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy. Manager Rob Marshall kept faith with the same side that swept aside Bellevue, with Joey Davies returning to the substitutes' bench.
Once again, the Mountain started the game brightly, and it took just two minutes for them to take the lead. Down the right, the ball was played forward into the path of Lee Messham. The Brymbo goalkeeper rushed out to clear the ball, but both players met the ball together and Messham won the ball, leaving him with the simple task of tapping into the empty net.
Despite having the wind advantage, Brymbo were unable to force any chances, with the ball mainly running through to Mountain goalkeeper Kirk Russell. In the twenty first minute, Flint Mountain doubled their lead. Down the left, Lee Messham raced through towards goal, before selflessly squaring the ball to an unmarked Marc Gunther. Gunther then smashed a shot towards, which flew past the goalkeeper. Three minutes, a third goal was added. Deep in his own half, Sean Williams played a beautiful ball over the Brymbo defence, in to the path of Jack Aitken. Aitken powered past his marker, but as he got to the byline, the defender bundled Aitken to the ground, with the referee pointing to the spot. Having missed a penalty earlier in the season, Sean Williams stepped. The midfielder made amends, however, by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
It was looking as though the Mountain would hold on to their lead going into the half time break, but just beforehand, Brymbo got themselves back into the game with a fortuitous goal. Having won a free kick on the half way line, they launched a ball forward. the ball bounced in the penalty area, before catching the wind and looping over Kirk Russell and into the net.
In the second half, Brymbo come out fighting and looking for a second goal. Despite their best efforts, they could only muster up some chances that mainly went wide of Kirk Russell's goal, whilst also being thankful for their own goalkeeper to keep them in the tie, making very good saves to deny Marc Gunther and substitute Jon Edmonds. With thirteen minutes to go, the game was settled, as Marc Gunther got his second of the game. Sean Williams was again instrumental, as he delivered a perfect cross to Gunther at the far post. Gunther controlled the ball and fired a vicious low shot into the bottom corner.
This win sends Flint Mountain into the final of the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy, where they will face Penyffordd Lions, who overcome Acton 4-3, gaining revenge after losing out to the same side last week in the Premier Cup semi-final. Next up, Flint Mountain will welcome second placed Mold Town United to the Pavilion. The away side still have a faint chance of overcoming their hosts to secure the North East Wales League title, but only a win will do. Both sides will also be looking to set a marker, as they meet in the President's Cup final on the 6th April.
