Mountain Reach Second Cup Final

Mountain Reach Second Cup Final

Robert Moore25 Feb 2019 - 15:57

Second half goals from Marc Gunther, Jack Aitken and a brace from Lee Messham send Flint Mountain through to the final of the President's Cup

Fresh from securing a place in the Horace Wynne Cup semi-final last week against Penyffordd Lions, attention remained on cups, as the Mountain made their way up to Caerwys and the semi-final of the Queensferry Sports President's Cup. Only earlier in the month, Caerwys were forced to forfeit the Premier Cup semi-final against the league leaders, but with their troubles now hopefully resolved, they were ready and raring to go in this game. The Mountain made a couple of changes, with Kirk Russell returning between the posts, whilst Marc Gunther also come into the side, replacing Keiran Farr, who dropped to the substitutes' bench.

The away side were on the front foot from the first whistle, and Marc Gunther had a chance to open the scoring early on, but saw his overhead kick narrowly miss the bottom corner. Caerwys were doing their best to attack themselves, and a quick counter attack saw them force Mountain goalkeeper Kirk Russell into a smart save to deny them. They were also indebted to their own goalkeeper, who ensured that any Mountain attacks were thwarted. At the break, the scores remained level.

In the second half, Mountain started much like the first half, as they quickly looked to get a goal. It took two minutes of the second half, as Marc Gunther hit his fifth goal of the season. From just outside the penalty area, Gunther's shot took a deflection off a Caerwys defender, before looping past the stranded goalkeeper to give the Mountain the lead. One turned to two in quick succession, as the away side delivered a sucker punch to extend the lead. Advancing forward on goal, Sean Williams found Lee Messham in space, and the Mountain striker fired a low shot across goal and into the bottom corner.

Mid way through the half, Manager Rob Marshall made some changes to freshen up the team, with Pete Martin finally making his Mountain debut, whilst Keiran Farr and Rob Rush were also introduced. Martin was quickly into the action, breaking up play and making vital headers to clear the ball from the Mountain half. With fifteen minutes to go, Mountain added a third goal to increase the lead further. It was Lee Messham who got himself onto the scoresheet for the second time, as he latched onto a through ball and smashed a half volley past the goalkeeper.

Caerwys showed they weren't done yet, as with eight minutes remaining, they grabbed a goal back. the Caerwys player got free of the Mountain defence and fired a shot past Kirk Russell to make sure the final minutes were not a stroll. However, this didn't last long, as the three goal lead was restored three minutes from time. Down the right, Marc Gunther delivered a cross into the area, which was met by the Caerwys goalkeeper. However, the goalkeeper let the ball go through his hands and fall kindly for Jack Aitken, who pounced and simply nodded the ball into the net to secure the win and passage into the final.

That win now sees Flint Mountain into the final of the Queensferry Sports President's Cup, where they will face Mold Town United, who overcome Connah's Quay Nomads U18s. The details of the final will be announced soon. Next up, Flint Mountain welcome Bellevue to the Northop Hall Pavilion, in a top versus bottom clash in the first league game of 2019.
