After last weeks' mixed emotions, in which Caerwys were unable to field a team, but saw Flint Mountain progress to the final of the Premier Cup for the first time, attention turned to yet another cup game, with a short trip to Abbots Lane School in the second round of the Horace Wynne Cup. The opponents were Penyffordd Lions, who hold the trophy after last season's success, where they convincingly beat the Mountain in the semi-final. Manager Rob Marshall was forced into making several changes for the game, with players missing due to suspensions, being cup-tied and other personal commitments. In goal, Ryan Roberts was on hand to deputise for Kirk Russell, whilst Keiran Farr, Joey Davies and Lee Messham all returning to the starting line up.
The Mountain were on the front foot from the first whistle and immediately pressed for an opening goal. It took just six minutes for the goal to arrive. From a free kick on the right, Sean Williams floated in a ball to the back post, where an unmarked Dean Hughes headed past the stranded goalkeeper and into the net. Whilst pressing for further goals, the away team could not muster any clear cut chances on goal, as the first half turned into a drab affair.
In the second half, the action turned lively, as an initial late challenge on Mark Williams went unpunished by the referee, before several more late tackles from both teams also saw the referee let things go. Despite the tight scoreline, neither goalkeeper was really tested and it wasn't until late in the game that Flint Mountain wrapped up the win, again courtesy of Dean Hughes. After winning a corner, Lee Messham swung in the ball to the back post, where Hughes was again unmarked as he made sure the ball found the net from close range.
That win now sees Flint Mountain into a fourth semi-final, where we now await the draw, with the tie due to be played on the 23rd March. Next up, Flint Mountain face a second semi-final against Caerwys, in the Queensferry Sports President's Cup. The Mountain will be looking to reach the final for the first time since 2015, where they lost out to Cefn Albion.
