Hughes Bags Brace As Mountain Progress

Flint Mountain secure their passage to the next round of the President's Cup as Richie Hughes comes back to haunt Sychdyn

Once again, this week the league had to be put aside as another cup competition starts, the Queensferry Sports President's Cup. Mountain's first round opponents were Sychdyn. This would be the first meeting between the two sides this season, with the league fixtures yet to be played. Mountain were rocked during the week by the sudden departure of winger Luke Walker, who re signed for his former side, FC Nomads of Connah's Quay Reserves.

With that in mind, Mountain switched formations to a more conventional 4-4-2. Chris Layne returned to the starting lineup in place of the departed Walker, whilst Ryan Bradley started the game at right back in place of Ryan Jones, who dropped to the subs' bench.

Mountain started the game slowly, struggling to pick up the same intensity of last week's derby game. This proved to be costly as a vastly improved Sychdyn side took the lead after 17 minutes. A Sychdyn midfielder made a break through the middle and rode a couple of challenges. He fed the ball to the right flank, the cross was poor and squirmed across the Mountain penalty area but was not dealt with. Arrving at the back post was another unmarked Sychdyn player who side footed the ball home.

This goal seemed to spark Mountain into life, as they gradually started to dominate. Sychdyn had already had their goalkeeper to thank as he saved well from two one on one chances before Mountain finally found an equaliser just before the end of the first half. Mountain's strikers Chris Layne and Richie Hughes combined well, with Layne feeding the ball to Hughes inside the area, allowing him to turn fire low into the left corner.

Into the second half, Sychdyn looked to take advantage of the downhill advantage by launching long balls forward. These were mostly dealt with easily by the Mountain defense who were able to head the ball back to Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett.

After 57 minutes, Mountain took the lead for the first time in the game. Once again, Richie Hughes proved to be the scurge of his former side. This time it was midfielder Craig Jones who cut the ball back to Hughes and he fired home his eighth goal of the season.

With twenty minutes remaining, midfielder Alex Millington was forced off through injury and was replaced by Adam Humphreys. Mountain also took this opportunity to replace Ryan Bradley with Ryan Jones in a stright swap at right back. The game started to fizzle out as Sychdyn looked towards using a long throw to force mistakes from the Mountain defense. For the last 14 minutes, Layne was replaced up top by Aaron Austin, who looked lively during his brief cameo appearance. Mountain were able to hold on and now await their opponents in the next round.

Next up for Mountain is a return to Dock Road, where Acton FC are the opponents. Acton are currently sitting on place below Mountain in sixth place, with four wins and four defeats from eight games.
