It had been a long extended break since Flint Mountain's last game on the 8th December, with postponements and the festive break meaning they could only return to action this weekend, with a trip to Borras Park Albion on the agenda in the first round of the Horace Wynne Cup. Manager Rob Marshall would be without players ineligible for this cup, whilst Keiran Farr and Joey Davies were also missing.
There were concerns that the game would not go ahead due to heavy fog in the area, but after the referee gave the go ahead, the Mountain started off the brighter side and after two early chances, they took the lead in the eleventh minute. Goalkeeper Kirk Russell launched the ball forward towards Jack Aitken. Aitken headed the ball onwards into the path of Jon Edmonds, who composed himself and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to take the lead. Five minutes later, the score was doubled thanks to Dean Hughes. From a Jake Williams corner, Hughes met the ball at the back post with a simple header into the net.
It wasn't until six minutes from the half for the third goal to arrive. Jimmy McGlone come into the middle of the pitch, give his marker a dummy and then fired a low shot on goal. The shot was straight at the goalkeeper, but he spilled the shot into his own net. Things turned sour for McGlone minutes later, as he was then shown his marching orders by the referee. After being frustrated by late challenges, McGlone reacted to another challenge with an attempted stamp, which was spotted by the referee and he was rightfully given a red card.
In the second half, the match was largely uneventful, as more chances went begging. With fifteen minutes remaining, Borras were given a lifeline when Kirk Russell raced out from goal and brought down an oncoming Borras striker, with the referee left with no choice but to point to the spot. Borras then found the bottom corner, to give the last part of the game more meaning. In the last minute, Borras were caught out as they pressed for another goal. David Walkiewicz, on as a second half substitute, knocked the ball past the last defender and ran through clear on goal. he then tried to take the ball around the goalkeeper, but then brought down at the referee again pointed to the penalty spot. Walkiewicz picked himself up and fired past the goalkeeper for his first Flint Mountain goal.
This result sees Flint Mountain into the second round of the Horace Wynne Cup, where we now await confirmation of our opponents. Next up, the Mountain return to league action and another trip to Brymbo, taking on Brymbo Victoria. The two sides met on the opening day of the league season, with a Jake Williams strike settling a tight game.
