After last week's demolition of struggling Borras Park Albion, Flint Mountain this week turned their attention to the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy and a second round clash against high flying Mold Town United at the Rec. Mold had quietly gone about their business and now sit second in the North East Wales League. With both injury and illness affecting the squad this week, Mountain manager Rob Marshall was forced into a few changes for this game. Dean Hughes was again required to deputise in goal, whilst there were also starts for Keiran Farr, Joey Davies, Sean Williams and Jon Edmonds, who were able to return.
The game started slowly and neither side were able to carve out any clear cut chances, with both goalkeepers rarely tested. It took until the half hour mark for the first goal to arrive. Sean Williams floated a free kick to the back post, where Mountain captain Jake Williams was on hand to hammer the ball low into the net. The lead didn't last long however, as Mold equalised just four minutes later. With Mold in a dangerous area outside the penalty area, a foul was committed by Mark Williams, but Mold carried on and hit the post with a shot. Despite the referee seemingly allowing the play to continue, the play was then brought back for a free kick. After the protests, the Mold player stepped up and curled the ball past Dean Hughes and into the bottom corner.
In the second half, it was Mold who then took the lead after 64 minutes. From a corner, a Mold player got free of their marker, and hit a shot low towards goal. Despite a man being on the post, the Mountain defence could not keep out the ball and the home team had the advantage. It was then the turn of Flint Mountain to level the scores quickly, equalising just three minutes later. From another set piece, Dylan Evans, just on as a substitute, helped the ball back into the danger area, where Jack Aitken's effort was well saved, before defender Mark Williams followed up with a diving header from close range, for his first goal of the season.
As the half drew on, it looked likely that extra time and penalties would be required to separate the two sides, before Jake Williams popped up ten minutes from time to give Flint Mountain the lead again. From a free kick, Sean Williams delivered the ball to his namesake at the back post, who arrived late and volleyed the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net. The win was secured with six minutes to go, as Flint Mountain grabbed their fourth goal. Once again, Sean Williams proved that despite him missing penalties, he can certainly deliver a free kick, as he lofted the ball into a dangerous area, where Dylan Evans got in and headed the ball into the net.
That win sees Flint Mountain into their third semi-final of the season, where they will now await the draw to find out their opponents. Next up, Flint Mountain wrap up 2018 with a trip to the Hollingsworth Group Stadium, where they will face Airbus Academy in their final game before the Christmas break.
