After increasing their lead in the North East Wales League to seven points last weekend against Caerwys, Flint Mountain this weekend took on second placed Acton, but in the second round of the Queensferry Sports President's Cup. The league's two top teams met in league action in September, with the Mountain picking up a 3-2 win. Manager Rob Marshall largely stuck with the side who beat Caerwys the previous week, with just Lee Messham dropping to the substitutes' bench, being replaced by Jimmy McGlone. there was also a space on the bench for new signing Ste Belli, who arrived in the week from Hawarden Rangers.
Throughout the first half, both teams looked find an opening. Acton had plenty of chances, but neither goalkeeper was really threatened as most flew high and wide. Just before half hour mark, Flint Mountain got the breakthrough goal thanks to Jack Aitken. The move started in the Mountain half, when after the home side had won back the ball, Sean Williams looked up and hit a sublime ball towards Jon Edmonds. The defender got caught under the ball, allowing to run towards goal, before clipping the ball into the penalty area, but only found an Acton defender. However, the defender made a hash of the clearance and the ball fell to Jack Aitken. Aitken controlled the ball before firing past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.
In the second half, Acton come out flying and will wonder how they did not immediately get an equaliser. Firstly, Acton's striker managed to get through one on one, but his shot went just wide of the post, which also saw Kirk Russell sustain an injury and colliding with the striker. Despite the injury, Russell was on hand to make a good save at his near post. Acton also watched a low shot drift agonisingly across the face of goal.
As the game reached the hour mark, Flint Mountain made Acton pay for those missed chances with a second goal, thirteen minutes into the half. Sean Williams was again the provider as he delivered a pinpoint corner to Jimmy McGlone, who was able to head past the goalkeeper whilst unmarked. Both sides continued to look for goals as the half drew on, and Acton did pull a goal back with ten minutes to go. After winning a free kick just outside the Mountain penalty area, the Acton striker stepped up and curled a low free kick into the bottom corner.
With just moments remaining of the game, Acton desperately looked for an equaliser to send the game into extra time, with their goalkeeper also coming forward in an attempt to get the all important goal. They did clip the bar, but Mountain held firm until the final whistle to secure a semi-final spot. Joining Flint Mountain in the semi-finals are Caerwys, Connah's Quay Nomads U18s and Mold Town United.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a top versus bottom clash, as the Mountain are up in Wrexham to take on Bradley Park.
