After the resounding victory against Cornist last week, Flint Mountain looked to continue that success with the start of the Horace Wynne Cup against Halkyn United Reserves.
Although not at their best, Flint Mountain did take the lead in the 16th minute. Good work by both winger Phil Marshall and striker Chris Layne down the left eventually found Layne into the penalty area, where his low shot was slotted past the Halkyn goalkeeper and into the net.
The half continued without much incident until just before half time, when Layne grabbed his second. This time, Layne and Marshall again linked up well before from just inside the area, Layne curled a lovely shot into the top left corner.
Into the second half, and Mountain continued in much the same way way as the first half. From a corner, Flint Mountain had their third goal. As the corner come in, midfielder Alex Millington's deflected pass found winger Tom Snaith, whose first time volley found the net.
After the goal, Mountain looked to change the play and secure the win. To do this, striker Aaron Austin was replaced by Dean Nolan, who moved into a defensive midfield role.
Then, with 10 minutes to go, Mountain made another substitution with a returning Tom Smith replacing Luciano Ciati.
Halkyn did manage to get a consolation goal with time running out. A cross into the area was not cleared as the Mountain defense napped and the ball was slotted into the bottom corner.
It was though, Mountain who had the final say in the game with a couple of minutes remaining. Substitute Tom Smith latched onto a corner from full back Ryan Jones and his low shot squirmed under the keeper and into the net.
This win means that Flint Mountain progress to the quarter finals of the Horace Wynne Cup, where we eagerly await confirmation of our opponents.
