Flint Mountain faced another trip to Wrexham this week, playing a much improved Unideg Pen y Bryn team, this time in the preliminary round of the NEWFA Challenge Cup. The previous outing between the two sides was a thrilling game which went all the way to penalties and this game proved just as eventful.
Pen y Bryn started the game much brighter and inside 10 minutes were 2 goals up. The first was from a pass to a player on the penalty spot who appeared offside, who turned a shot past Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. The Pen y Bryn second come from the penalty spot. Jason 'Rolly' Davies made a slide tackle on the byline to put the ball out for a corner but the referee adjudged him to have fouled the player, much to the dismay of the Mountain players.
Flint Mountain refused to let their heads drop and were looking threatening going forward. Striker Phil Marshall earned a free kick after being brought down on the left wing. Midfielder Craig Jones swung in the free kick and was headed into the net by Keiron Moore.
The equaliser followed very soon after. Phil Marshall's explosive running got him to the byline and passed across the face of goal. The ball bobbled around before Keiron Moore passed back to striker Aaron Austin who fired a sweet shot into the side of the net.
Those quickfire goals give Flint Mountain the momentum and confidence and before half time they took the lead. Phil Marshall was again instrumental down the left. His pass to Craig Jones was squared to Keiron Moore in the area and his shot bobbled over the Pen y Bryn goalkeeper.
Going into half time, Mountain were unlucky not to have a fourth goal when Chris Layne's strike was ruled out for offside. Into the second half and Layne did manage to get his goal. Layne burst forward into the area and was clearly brought down by the goalkeeper. He quickly got back up and the referee allowed play to continue as he then stroked the ball home from an awkward angle. Adam Humphreys made his way onto the pitch in place of Alex Millington in the centre of midfield just after the goal.
It was then Pen y Bryn's turn to show a resurgence. Their third goal come from a long ball forward, giving the striker a 30 yard free run in on goal. Their equaliser, and fourth goal come straight after, with substitute Adam Humphreys the unfortunate player, who whilst trying to clear the ball in his own area, lashed the ball into his own net.
After the equaliser Flint Mountain made another substitution with Nick Longridge replacing Aaron Austin and he got Mountain back into the lead with almost his first touch. Keiron Moore pounced on a spillage from the Pen y Bryn goalkeeper. The ball eventually found Longridge who fired home.
With the game running into the last 10 minutes, Mountain secured the win with a penalty. Phil Marshall, who plagued the Pen y Bryn defence all game, was brought down in the box. Marshall, the regular penalty taker, handed the duty to Keiron Moore who slotted home to complete his hat trick. Moore was then replaced to close out the game with Simon Lovell replacing him.
The last few minutes saw the red mist descend on Pen y Bryn with a few yellow cards and and one player given a red card as they tried to provoke Mountain's players. That win will see Flint Mountain into the first round of NEWFA Challenge Cup with the draw still to be made.
Next up for the Flint Mountain is back to Dock Road and back to league action as they take on Queens Park in a top of the table clash. Flint Mountain are looking for revenge and being thumped 6-2 earlier in the season.
