Another week and another midweek clash. Mountain once again made the short trip to Greenfield, this time in the NEWFA Challenge Cup second round. Mountain could welcome John Davies back to the starting line up for the injured Colin Davies, in the sole change from the comprehensive 10-1 win over Brymbo Victoria at the weekend.
Mountain made the perfect start to the game and were ahead after just two minutes. Jord Beck hit a first time through ball to Sam Jones, who ran through and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to put the away side in the lead. Both teams jostled for control of the game, but neither could make any clear cut chances until Greenfield levelled just after the half hour mark. A corner was swung in to the back post, where it was headed back into the centre and poor marking allowed the home team to find the net from close range. The level score did not last long, however, as Mountain retook the lead just a couple of minutes later. Getting down the left, the ball found Mark Foster, who fed to Phil Lloyd. Racing into the box, Lloyd opened up his body and curled a low shot into the far bottom corner. Mountain could not hold on to their lead and were pegged back six minutes before half time. A long ball down the middle was not dealt with. Greenfield raced through and despite Dan Roberts saving the initial effort, they scored with the rebound.
The second half was all Greenfield. They fired a warning shot, when adjudged onside they hit the bar from inside the box. More chances followed but they were unable to make the most of them. At the other end, Sam Jones hit a fierce shot that was well saved by the Greenfield goalkeeper. With eight minutes remaining and extra time looming, Greenfield got themselves deservedly in front. John Davies misjudged a ball forward and allowed the ball past him. Greenfield raced through, before a squared ball found their striker who fired past Roberts in the Mountain goal. Mountain looked to stage a late fightback, but were fruitless in their efforts and found themselves crashing out of the cup.
Next up, Mountain are again in cup action as we make the trip to old stomping ground Dock Road, as we take on Connah's Quay Town in the second round of the FAW Amateur Trophy. Mountain lost out to Town on penalties in the JD Welsh Cup last month, so will look to put things right and progress to the next round.
