Fresh from a week's break following the victory over Caerwys in the FAW Trophy first round last weekend, Halkyn & Flint Mountain returned to Pant Newydd, where they welcomed Lex in the league. Once again, injuries and personal commitments meant that yet more changes were made to the starting lineup. After both missed last week's win, captain Phil Lloyd and Sam Jones returned up top, Owain Edwards made his debut on the wing, while there were also starts for Louis Davies, Lucas Cruz and Colin Davies.
It took sixteen minutes for the opening goal to arrive. After a Mountain corner had been cleared, defender Pete Martin won back the ball on the halfway line after staying forward, he exchanged passes and got forward into the Lex box. After winning the ball again, he out-muscled his marker before hitting a low shot past the goalkeeper. It quickly became 2-0 in the twenty third minute. On the right, Tom Carney delivered a cross that was only cleared to the edge of the area, where Paul Williams was on hand to hit a half-volley that flew low past the keeper.
On the half hour mark, it was three. Tom Carney picked up the ball in the centre circle. He turned before hitting a perfect through ball to Sam Jones, who strode forward and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to put Mountain in complete control. In the second half, it didn't take long for Mountain to add a fourth. Coming short to get the ball, Sam Jones fed his strike partner Phil Lloyd, who dinked the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper. He could have had a second, spectacular goal, but Lloyd saw his overhead kick crash off the post.
Just after the hour mark, Lex had a goal back in the game, owing to Mountain taking their foot off the gas. They could have added another, but for Danny Stanton in the Mountain goal. With fifteen to go, Mountain had a fifth. Sam Jones played a neat one-two and broker into the box before being brought down. Phil Lloyd stepped up, sending the keeper the wrong way. It was then the turn of Lex to earn what was a contentious penalty. This time, Danny Stanton guessed right again, but saw the ball squirm under him. With just a minute to go, Mountain quashed any chance of a Lex comeback when Sam Jones had his second. Owain Edwards played the ball through to him, and Jones struck low past the goalkeeper when one on one.
Next up, Mountain are back on the road and face a trip to Brymbo Victoria in league action next Saturday.
