After tasting defeat on penalties in the JD Welsh Cup at the weekend, Halkyn & Flint Mountain looked to the midweek clash with Mynydd Isa Spartans to get immediately back to winning ways. Injuries and personal commitments meant that manager Rob Marshall was forced into a shake up of the starting 11. Liam Jones was finally able to make his debut, with Tom Lynch, Owen Davies, Sam Jones and Tom Carney all making starts.
The first half was largely a tight affair with both teams looking to unlock the respective defences. The game kicked into life in the 36th minute when Mynydd Isa took the lead with a diving header from a corner. Mountain quickly struck back just three minutes later, when Mark Foster, on as a substitute, headed in a Jord Beck cross at the near post. The pendulum swung again a couple of minutes later when they took advantage of poor defending, curling a low shot into the bottom corner.
In the second half, Mountain pressed for an equaliser but were delivered a sucker punch when Spartans won the ball back deep in the Mountain half and fired a shot that squeezed in at the near post, although there was confusion when the referee did not initially give the goal. Late in the game, Mynydd broke forward on the counter attack and sealed their deserved victory with more soft defending costing Mountain dear.
Next up, Mountain are back on the road with a trip to North East Wales Championship side, Caerwys, in the first round of the FAW Amateur Trophy. After two disappointing results and performances, a much needed win is vital to regain some momentum.
