After finally returning to competitive action at the weekend, Halkyn & Flint Mountain faced a quick turnaround and a short trip down to the coast road to take on local rivals Greenfield in our second league game of the season. Manager Rob Marshall shuffled the pack with Alex Goundrey and Owen Davies dropping to the bench, being replaced by Lee Messham and Mark Williams. There were also starts for Colin Davies and Jack James.
The first bit of action in the game come in the eighth minute, when Mountain were awarded a penalty. Picked up the ball outside the area, Sam Jones ran at the Greenfield defence, beating his marker for pace before being barged to the ground, with the referee pointing to the spot. Captain Phil Lloyd stepped up to take the penalty and calmly rolled the ball into the bottom corner after sending the Greenfield goalkeeper the wrong way.
The first half was a tight affair with both teams have good chances to score. Firstly, Danny Stanton was forced into a good save, tipping the ball round his post to deny the hosts an equaliser. At the other end, Aled Reece flashed a shot wide of the post, while Pete Martin headed wide from close range.
At the beginning of the second half, Greenfield took control of the game, but the Mountain were holding firm and restricting any clear cut chances for the hosts. Twenty minutes into the second half, however, Mountain grabbed a second goal against the run of play. With Greenfield having the ball at the back, Aled Reece won back the ball outside the area and fed it to Sam Jones. With Jones bearing down on goal, he fired low towards the bottom corner. The Greenfield goalkeeper managed to get a hand on the ball, but the ball found the back of the net.
As the game drew on, the got tight again with both teams pressing for more goals, however it was the Mountain who held out to record the win and claim the derby spoils.
Next up, Halkyn & Flint Mountain welcome newly reformed Connah's Quay Town to Pant Newydd in the first qualifying round of the Welsh Cup.
