Mountain Edge Scrappy Affair

Flint Mountain complete a league double over Sychdyn with a scrappy win at Dock Road

After the dramatic events of last week's cup game against Pen y Bryn, Flint Mountain returned to Dock Road and a home game against Sychdyn. The Mountain Men gave a first start to midfielder Tom Snaith and welcomed the return to the squad of Ryan Jones, who has returned from a serious knee injury that has kept him from action for over a year.

Flint Mountain started the better team and get their reward after just 10 minutes. Chris Layne, who has been in great recent form, ran the ball down the right and beat the Sychdyn left back. He then pulled back the ball for winger Phil Marshall to side foot home for his seventh goal of the season.

Sychdyn were looking to get back into the game and tried to take advantage of the looseness shown by Mountain defensively. They had a near miss from a corner which they couldn't convert.

The first half didn't produce much more and the half ended with Mountain still ahead by the solitary goal. The second half continued much the same as the first but on 65 minutes, Flint Mountain managed to get their second.

Defender Kevin Thomas, recently signed from Sychdyn, played a long ball forward for Aaron Austin. The ball reached Austin who then lashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Just after the goal, Mountain looked to the bench to change up the play, with Tom Snaith being replaced by another debutant, Nick Longridge.

Another change late into the game saw goalscorer Austin being replaced by Troy Wilson to preserve the clean sheet.

This win has kept Flint Mountain in second place in the league, all be it with playing more games than the teams around us. Next up for Flint Mountain is another trip to Wrexham to face Unideg Pen Y Bryn, this time in the preliminary round of the NEWFA challenge cup.
