With the last 2 weeks' defeats still fresh in the minds of everyone involved at Flint Mountain, we looked to bounce back and get back to business, this time with the visit of Acton FC. Mountain were without several players but were able to field veteran defender Kevin Thomas for the first time after his transfer from Sychdyn. On the bench was another new signing, Tom Snaith, who has recently returned to the UK after living, and playing, in China.
The makeshift Mountain side did fall behind very early into the game with Acton taking the lead after just 3 minutes. The side continued to struggle early on against a resilient Acton team and had two penalty shouts turned away before eventually the breakthrough come in the 26th minute. Winger Phil Marshall, playing in an unfamiliar central midfield role, played a lovely through ball for striker Tom Jones to run onto. Jones duly obliged and then cooly slotted away the ball in his one on one with the goalkeeper.
The score remained the same into the second half where Mountain made a much better start, with shots from distance well saved by the Acton keeper. The second goal had to wait until the 67th minute, where Tom Jones' shot was handled in the area. Phil Marshall took the penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way. A few minutes later debutant Tom Snaith replaced Adam Humphreys and quickly got involved.
It was then the turn of Acton to press and from a resulting free kick, Mountain goalkeeper Ricky made a marvellous save low to his right.
Mountain were able to put the game to bed in the 82nd minute. An Acton corner was cleared to Chris Layne who charged forward and switched the play to the right for Tom Jones. He attacked the penalty box and played the ball back for Layne to shoot. His first shot was saved by by the Acton keeper but made sure with the rebound.
After that, two substitutions were made in quick succession to close out the game, with Aaron Young and Tom Allen replacing Aaron Austin and Chris Layne. Next up for The Mountain men is a trip to Wrexham to face Unideg Pen Y Bryn in the Clwyd East President's Cup first round. Mountain will be hoping to avenge the recent league defeat against the Wrexham based side, who beat us 4-2 at Dock Road just a couple of weeks ago.
