With the torrential rain that preceded the Flint Mountain game against high flying Mold Town United, there were real concerns that the game would be a wash out. Luckily the pitch held up very well and the referee was happy for the ball to ahead. Flint Mountain were missing our two top goalscorers in Tom Jones and Craig Jones.
The game started and Mold were quickly trying to get the ball forward, over the back of the Mountain defence. However, it was Mountain who took the lead after just six minutes. A ball for striker Phil Marshall to race onto was picked up by him but his shot was blocked. Following up was midfielder Adam Humphreys in his first league start for the club. His follow up shot managed to find its way through the crowd of players in the Mold area and off the far post and in.
That early strike gave added confidence to The Mountain Men who then started to dominate the proceedings. Mountain's second goal then came in the 19th minute. Left back Luciano Ciati floated a perfectly weighted ball into the Mold area and Keiron Moore was able to expertly guide the ball past the Mold goalkeeper and into the bottom corner, on the volley.
Mountain continued to press but were unable to capitalise, as several tackles were flying in by both teams, with Phil Marshall picking up a yellow card before half time for a late tackle on a Mold player. At half time midfielder Keiron Moore had complained that he was feeling unwell and so was replaced by full back Troy Wilson. The second half saw Mold start much brighter and looking to recover a goal and saw two shots fly past the posts of Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett.
The next big talking point saw the Mold goalkeeper palm away a lob that had been attempted over him. The Mountain players were incensed as they believed he was outside of his area when he made the save, but our appeals were turned away by the referee.
Flint Mountain were able to finally get the elusive third goal when Chris Layne was brought down in the Mold area after a driving run through the Mold defence. Phil Marshall stepped up to take the penalty and planted the ball to the keeper's left.
With 10 minutes left to play, Flint Mountain were forced to play with just 10 men as Striker Aaron Austin was forced off the pitch through injury, with Mountain having no other substitutes available. We did, however, get our fourth and final goal and couple of minutes later, with Layne and Marshall again combining. This time, Layne won the ball from a hesitant Mold defender and his simple pass to Marshall allowed him to slot the ball under the oncoming Mold goalkeeper.
That win has now moved Flint Mountain level on points with league leaders FC Queens Park, although with Queens Park having a game in hand. Next up for the Mountain Men is a league clash against Mostyn Dragons on the 14th September.
