Mountain Claim The Spoils

Mountain Claim The Spoils

Robert Moore1 Sep 2013 - 09:14

Flint Mountain end August with an efficient performance and a third successive home win against Gresford SSC at Dock Road

With the Mountain Men buoyed by last week's comeback win against Pen Y Bryn, Flint Mountain looked to claim another win at home, this time against league new boys Gresford SSC.

Flint Mountain started the game much the better side and took the lead just 4 minutes. Good passing play from several Mountain players eventually found the ball coming to winger Chris Layne, whose long ball forward was missed by the defender. Striker Tom Jones then won the foot race to the ball and slotted the ball into the corner past the outrushing Gresford goalkeeper.

Mountain kept up their dominating play but were unable to build upon their slender lead until the 27th minute. Luciano Ciati, standing in at left back, burst forward with the ball and his shot was saved by the goalkeeper, only for the rebound to fall to Chris Layne, who confidently smashed it home.

With half time fast approaching, Gresford did get themselves a chance to get back into the game, but the striker saw his shot saved by Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett, after he managed to get through the defence. The game stayed the same into half time.

Gresford started the second have brightly and got their reward with a goal on 50 minutes to give them hope of a comeback. Flint Mountain responded to this by upping their tempo again and were unlucky not be awarded a goal when the Gresford goalkeeper and was adjudged to have been fouled, much to the annoyance of the Mountain players who felt no foul was committed.

Manager Gareth Young then looked to freshen up the play, replacing Alex Millington with Adam Humphreys and just 5 minutes later, Mountain regained their two goal advantage. Chris Layne was once again the provider for Tom Jones, who placed his shot into the bottom corner.

Just as the goal was scored Mountain made two changes in quick succession, replacing both strikers. Phil Marshall and Tom Jones were replaced by Tom Smith and Aaron Austin. Austin quickly got himself onto the scoresheet with Mountain's fourth and final goal of the game. Chris Layne raced onto a pass and rounded the keeper but his shot was looking to go wide, allowing Austin to tap in from a yard out.

The win has now pushed Flint Mountain into second place in the league, three points behind league leaders FC Queens Park. Next up for the Mountain is a trip to Mold to face the final league new boys, Mold Town United who currently sit in fourth place in the league after 5 games. The game is due to be played on the 7th of September.
