Mountain edge tense thriller

Mountain edge tense thriller

Robert Moore21 Aug 2013 - 06:56

Flint Mountain make up for the disappointment of the weekend with a hard fought victory in a tight fiery game against Caerwys

After the disappointment of Queens Park gaining a deserved victory over the Mountain in our first away trip of the season, Flint Mountain looked to get back on track at Dock Road against Caerwys. Caerwys always prove to be tough opposition and tonight was no exception.

The first half started brightly and after only two minutes, Mountain were ahead. Keiron Moore, in his first competitive start for the club, won the ball in the centre then played a ball over the defence for Phil Marshall to chase. The goalkeeper rushed out but Marshall was able to knock the ball past him before pulling the ball back for Tom Jones to score an easy finish.

The next big talking point came in the 18th minute when Caerwys broke through the Mountain defence only for Jason 'Rolly' Davies brought down the striker on the edge of the area, earning himself a yellow card in the process. The resulting free kick was put over the bar, much to the relief of the Mountain.

The game continued with both teams having chances and lots of tackles flying in. Alex Millington then found himself going into the referee's notebook just before half time. Millington was punished for a late tackle which also saw the Caerwys defender booked for his reaction to the tackle.

Mountain started the second much the way they did the first and went close from Luciano Ciati and Phil Marshall. Mountain looked to change things around with substitutions. Keiron Moore and Luciano Ciati were replaced by Tom Smith and Adam Humphreys before defender Pat Davey suffered an injury meaning Troy Wilson was sent on to replace him.

Only a couple of minutes later, Caerwys were level. Caerwys got into a two on one situation on the left before playing the ball into the centre and the player slotted home past goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. That goal gave Caerwys a confidence boost and they were soon ahead. A free kick was floated in and the resulting header was put past Bennett via the crossbar. This time of the match also saw Caerwys' manager sent off after falling foul of the referee after berating him throughout the match.

Those goals spurred on the Mountain, with Caerwys' lead lasting only two minutes. Craig Jones played a lovely ball over the Caerwys defence, with Tom Jones running on to the ball into a one on one with the goalkeeper and cooly slotting home into the corner.

The game turned to the Mountain's favour and with just 7 minutes remaining, retook the lead. Good build up play from several Mountain players ended with Tom Jones laying the ball to Phil Marshall who fired the ball under the goalkeeper and into the corner. Mountain then held off a late Caerwys charge to secure the much needed victory against a team considered to be a rival for position this season.

Next up for Mountain is another trip to Wrexham, this time to face Unideg Pen y Bryn. Mountain were able to claim the league double over them last season so will hope for similar this year.
