With Mountain playing well during their pre season campaign, we looked to carry that through as we began our league season against newly formed team and local rivals, Cornist Park FC. The match was the first for Mountain at our new ground at Dock Road in Connah's Quay.
Mountain gave competitive debuts to three of our new signings, Chris Layne, Tom Jones and Pat Davey, with Keiron Moore and Adam Humphreys named amongst the substitutes.
The game began with Mountain dominating the early exchanges. The first didn't come until the 14th minute from a freak own goal. A corner was swung in and after the move looked to break down with the Cornist defender making a clearance, the ball was sliced straight into the air and somehow managed to find it's way over the goalkeeper and into the net.
The score was quickly doubled when Luciano Ciati played a teasing ball through the defence allowing debutant Tom Jones to slot confidently into the bottom corner.
In the 25th minute it looked like Cornist might get a breakthrough against the Mountain defence only for Mountain captain Stuart Buxton to bring down the player as he looked to go clean through, picking up a yellow card in the process.
The third Mountain goal showed how Mountain like to play football, with a good move involving several players ended in Tom Jones finding space to lay the ball into the path of Craig Jones to tap home. The half ended with several chances going astray and Mountain unlucky not to go into half time with a higher margin.
The second half began much the same as the first, and Mountain quickly found their rhythm again. The fourth goal come in the 50th minute, courtesy of Jason 'Rolly' Davies. Another corner played into the Cornist area found Davies, whose shot squirmed it's way through the goalkeeper's hands and into the net.
The floodgates started to open and Mountain had another two goals in 5 minutes. The fifth goal was accredited to Alex Millington who was hit by a shot and found it's way into the net. The sixth goal come from Luciano Ciati. Andy Pugh played a great ball past the full back to Ciati who tricked his way past two more defenders before rifling an unstoppable shot past the Cornist keeper.
Mountain looked to freshen up the play with the introduction of three substitutions in quick succession. Tom Jones, Phil Marshall and Andy Pugh were replaced by Aaron Austin and debutants Adam Humphreys and Keiron Moore.
The seventh goal soon followed, Millington lifting a pass over the defence for Craig Jones to chest and fire past the goalkeeper to get the second of the game.
Debutant Chris Layne then got in on the act, receiving a pass from Aaron Austin, after good work on the right by the striker, and drilling low into the corner.
Jones then got his hat trick, scoring after more good work from Ciati on the left.
Mountain entered double figures a minute later. Chris Layne repaid Austin with a pass in which he then smashed low past the goalkeeper.
The rout was complete on the stroke of full time, Millington laying on a pass inside the area to substitute Adam Humphreys whose shot was deflected into the net.
Next up for Flint Mountain is our first away league trip of the season to face new league team FC Queens Park, who beat fellow Wrexham based side Pen Y Bryn 5-2 in their opening day fixture. The game will be played on Saturday 17th August, as Mountain will look for a repeat performance of tonight's game.
