Mountain Take Down Villa

Robert Moore10 Feb 2020 - 12:56

First half goals from Sean Williams and Aled Reece secure all three points for Halkyn & Flint Mountain on a blustery afternoon in New Brighton

Following the late loss against Coedpoeth United last weekend, Halkyn & Flint Mountain looked to bounce back with another away trip, this time a short trip to New Brighton Villa. Villa had won out in the reverese fixture in September. With no less than seven players unavailble, manager Rob Marshall made a number of changes for the game, with Richie Walker making his first start deputising in goal, whilst Dean Hughes, Damon Griffiths, Liam Mortimer and Tom Lynch all returned to the starting line up, whilst new signing Ben Sim was given a start on his debut.

New Brighton started brightly and pressed for a early opener, but could not fashion out a definitive shot on target. After riding the early pressure, it was the Mountain who opened the scoring. Sean Williams had just missed a golden opportunity, but made no mistake with his second chance. On the left, Liam Mortimer fired a ball a ball over the New Brighton defence. Williams raced through and beyond the attempted offside trap, before rounding the goalkeeper and tapping in the open the scoring. The goal provided a shift in momentum towards the Mountain and they doubled their lead shortly afterwards. From a corner, Sean Williams swung in a dangerous ball towards goal. Aled Reece attacked the ball, arriving and bulleting a header from point blank range.

Rattled, New Brighton were making mistakes at the back and it could have been three just a minute later. The goalkeeper skewed his goal kick straight to Ben Sim, but his low shot just went wide of the bottom corner. As half time approached, New Brighton were fortunate to keep eleven men on the pitch as a late challenge on Dean Hughes produced only a yellow card from the referee. Hughes was later replaced by Carl Wright at half time.

In the second half, both Ben Sim and Sean Williams had chances that were easily saved by the New Brighton goalkeeper, before stand-in Mountain keeper Richie Walker was called into action. With a header seemingly going into the bottom corner, Walker pulled off a fabulous save, somehow keeping the ball out, before it was scrambled away for a corner. With no further goals, Mountain secured another priceless three points that see them rise to fifth in the table.

Next up, Mountain will look to put things right with another trip to Llangollen Town. Llangollen crushed the Mountain 5-1 last month in the Divison One Cup quarter final, so a much improved performance and result are needed next time around.
