After the agony of defeat and the performance last week against Llangollen in the Division One Cup, Halkyn & Flint Mountain looked to bounce back with a tough trip to Stansty Park to take on Coedpoeth United. It was the first game between the two sides this season after previous games were postponed due to the weather. With Manager Rob Marshall unavailable, Assistant Manager Rob Thelwell took the reins and immediately recalled Lee Messham to the starting line up after he had missed out due to personal commitments, whilst Jake Williams and Mark Foster also started after only making the bench last week.
The windy conditions made it tough in the first half for the Mountain, with them struggle to clear their lines early on. After riding the pressure for the first few minutes, they took the lead in the fifteenth minute from a corner. Lee Messham had just gone close, forcing a decent save from the goalkeeper. From the resulting corner, Keiran Farr swung the ball towards the near post. Central defender Mark Williams met the ball, diverting his header past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. Coedpoeth continued to press throughout the half and Ryan Roberts made a couple of fine saves to deny them. However, five minutes before the break, the home team had their equaliser. Swinging in a corner to the far post, Coedpoeth's striker rose high unmarked to head past Roberts into the Mountain net.
In the second half, the weather conditions started to give Coedpoeth issues, as they also struggled to clear the ball into the strong winds down the pitch. Despite this, it was the home team that took the lead with twenty minutes to go. Getting down the left, the Coedpoeth striker bundled Shaun Thomson to the ground. The referee waved play on and Coedpoeth took full advantage, firing low past Roberts into the net. The lead didn't last long though, as Mountain struck straight back within three minutes. From another corner, a goalmouth scramble ensued, before Mark Williams smashed home from close range.
With the momentum shifting to the Mountain they piled on the pressure with wave after wave of attacks. Richie Walker, making his debut on as a substitute, fired an audacious shot from long range. With the ball flying towards goal, the Coedpoeth goalkeeper made an outrageous save, somehow tipping the ball over the bar for a corner. With time running out, Coedpoeth launched a counter attack. From this, they smashed the ball past Ryan Roberts into the top corner to win the game.
Next up, Mountain face New Brighton Villa at the Estadio de Mark Lopez in New Brighton. After narrowly losing out to Villa in September, the Mountain will look to bounce back from this defeat with a win.
