After the last minute Jake Williams goal last week against Mynydd Isa Spartans, Halkyn & Flint Mountain Mountain looked forward to another home game, where we looked to welcome second from bottom Overton Recreational to Pant Newydd. Unfortunately, the weather throughout the week was not kind and with the prospect of Pant Newydd being unplayable, the Mountain switched the game to the Hollingsworth Group Stadium, the 3G home of Airbus. Manager Rob Marshall brought back Carl Wright, Liam Mortimer, Jord Beck, Tom Lynch and Keiran Farr all into the starting line up, whilst Jimmy McGlone and Mark Foster dropped to the bench, joined by the returning Lee Messham.
It took some time for both teams to get going, with misplaced passes a theme throughout the first half. Whilst Ryan Roberts was untested in the Mountain goal, the Mountain themselves didn't really test the Overton keeper, with any chances restricted to speculative shots from range that flashed wide of goal as the half drew on. The second saw the Mountain increase the pressure as they seemed to finally find their rhythm. The introduction of Lee Messham and Jimmy McGlone helped spark a fight for an opening goal, with the team moving into a more attacking formation. Messham thought he'd opened the scoring, but his low shot into the net was then cruelly ruled out for offside. Fellow substitute Jimmy McGlone then got in on the action, as he directed a header that crashed onto the crossbar.
Overton then thought that they'd grabbed an unlikely goal themselves, but again the referee chalked off the goal due to offside. With time running out, the crossbar was hit a further two times, before a goal finally came with two minute remaining. After yet another effort was directed onto the crossbar and then out for a corner, Sean Wiliams delivered a teasing ball into the box. Jimmy McGlone rose highest, directing a header over the waiting defender on the post and into the net. It was the reward for sustained pressure on goal. In the final minutes, Mountain held on and secured another three points, as they rose up the table with the win, and gained a measure of revenge after defeat to Overton earlier in the season.
Next up, Halkyn & Flint Mountain make the journey up to Llangollen, where Llangollen Town await us in the second round of the WNL Division One Cup.
