Following an agonising five weeks without a fixture, Halkyn & Flint Mountain could finally return to competitive action with a tough fixture against Lex XI at Stansty Park. The Mountain were without a win in four games and had suffered defeat to their opponents on the opening day of the season, so there was an added incentive to return to winning ways. Manager Rob Marshall was able to recall Ryan Roberts, Alex Jones and Sean Williams to the starting line up, whilst Lee Messham also returned to the squad on the substitutes' bench.
The opening exchanges were very even as both sides jostled to get on top. In the eighteenth minute, the home team took the lead. With acres of space in the middle, a Lex midfielder played a through ball to his striker beyond the Mountain defence. He controlled the ball and hit a low ball past Ryan Roberts in the Mountain goal. Shortly afterwards, Jimmy McGlone should have equalised. On the right, Liam Mortimer hit a beautiful cross with the outside of his foot towards McGlone, who unmarked from six yards out, could only head over the bar. Just before half time, Mountain were indebted to Ryan Roberts, who got down low to save a low shot destined for the bottom corner.
In the second half, Mountain continued their search of an equaliser, but initially to no avail. On the hour, Lex had a second goal. With the ball looping over his shoulder, the Lex striker hit a fantastic volley that flew past Roberts and cannoned off the crossbar, hitting the ground before being collected by Roberts. The referee, however, claimed the ball had crossed the line and gave a goal. This seemed to galvanise the Mountain, with changes made to freshen up the attack, with Mark Foster and Lee Messham both coming on from the bench.
Just two minutes later, Halkyn & Flint Mountain got themselves back into the game. At the back post, Lee Messham, just on as a sub, picked up the ball, steadied himself before firing past the Lex goalkeeper. Lex were stunned and suddenly were on the back foot again, as Mountain equalised with a quick fire double. Jimmy McGlone raced through onto a through ball. He shrugged off his marker, before hitting a low shot past the goalkeeper.
At this point, Mountain were all over Lex and deservedly took the lead for the first time in the game with thirteen minutes to go. Aled Reece, who had been superb all game, played a perfect through ball to Sean Williams who got past the Lex defence. He then rounded the goalkeeper and slid the ball into the empty net. The away side tried in vain to put the game out of sight of the hosts, but the crossbar denied them twice. Despite some nervy moments late in the game, Halkyn & Flint Mountain held on the secure a priceless three points.
Next up, Halkyn & Flint Mountain will be back at Pant Newydd as we welcome Coedpoeth United, looking to build upon this weekend's result.
