After a pleasing performance last week despite the defeat to Denbigh Town in the FAW Trophy, Halkyn & Flint Mountain looked to replicate that after bounce back in the league. Manager Rob Marshall was able to welcome back Kirk Russell in goal, after he re-joined the club earlier in the week following a short stint at Caerwys. Pete Martin also returned after missing the visit of Denbigh, but Matty Howard and Jake Williams both missed out due to suspensions after their sendings off against Overton.
New Brighton started the brighter of the teams and looked to utilise the strong winds in their favour. Ten minutes in, they could have led, but for the crossbar to stop a long range effort. New Brighton had just seen a second shot clip the top of the crossbar when Halkyn & Flint Mountain took the lead in the sixteenth minute. The ball was played up to Sean Williams, who turned and drove into the New Brighton half. Under no pressure from their defence, he played a ball to the right and into the path of Jimmy McGlone, who took the ball into the penalty area and fired past the goalkeeper.
On the half hour, New Brighton were level. From a corner, the ball went to the far post before it was helped back into the middle. Sloppy marking then allowed a New Brighton defender to simply tap in from close range. Two minutes later, the away team took the lead. A long diagonal ball was dealt with and the New Brighton winger managed to reach the ball. He kept it in play and then took the ball inside, before firing a low shot past Kirk Russell at his near post. From the restart, however, Mountain got their second. Again, Sean Williams found himself in space in the New Brighton half. In almost a carbon copy of the first goal, Williams found Jimmy McGlone in the box and he slid the ball into the corner for his second of the game.
In the second half, Mountain come out fighting and retook the lead on 53 minutes. A free kick into the penalty area looked to be going out of play, but Aled Reece did well to stop the ball, before a low pass to the near post found Jimmy McGlone, who gladly tapped in from a couple of yards to complete his hat trick.
As the game entered the final quarter, New Brighton picked up the pressure and a vicious effort from the New Brighton winger was tipped onto the crossbar by Kirk Russell. The winger was not to be denied though, and with fifteen minutes to go he turned inside and smashed a curling effort over the head of Kirk Russell and into the net to level the scores again. Two minutes later and New Brighton had the lead back. A midfielder was able to run straight through the middle of the park, before a low shot somehow found the bottom corner.
With time running out, Halkyn & Flint Mountain were awarded a penalty when Jimmy McGlone was brought down. Sean Williams stepped up to take the penalty, but his effort was saved by the New Brighton goalkeeper, who tipped the ball onto the crossbar before gathering the rebound. It was Williams' second penalty miss of the season after also missing in the league defeat to Hawarden Rangers last month. Things went from bad to worse for the Mountain went Pete Martin was shown a second yellow card late in the game for nodding the ball out of the goalkeeper's hands as he went to take a kick.
Next up, Halkyn & Flint Mountain have a week off before they face an away trip to Rhosllanerchrugog in the league on the 5th October.
