Fresh from their first league win of the season last week, Halkyn & Flint Mountain were back on the road and made their way to Overton Recreational. Adam Leigh was restored between the sticks, whilst there were also starts for David Walkiewicz and Mark Foster.
It was Mountain who opened the scoring after twenty minutes. Shaun Thomson fed the ball through to Jack Aitken in the box. Aitken held up the ball well before finding strike partner Aled Reece, who turned his man and fired low into the bottom corner to score his first league goal for the club. The lead lasted only ten minutes, as Overton got themselves level. With the ball lofted towards the Mountain penalty area, goalkeeper Adam Leigh went to claim the ball. However, an Overton player got his head to the ball, and as it ran towards goal, an Overton player was able to tap into the empty Mountain net.
In the second half, Mountain upped the pressure and began to turn the screw. Half way through the second half, replacement keeper Matty Howard, who had replaced Adam Leigh in goal due to injury, was shown his marching orders when he handled the ball outside his penalty area. Despite this, the momentum was still with the away side for a couple of minutes, when they were cruelly reduced to nine men. Having been turned by his man, Jake Williams clipped the heels of his man. With the referee blowing his whistle, everyone in attendance expected a standard yellow card to be issued, but to the bemusement of everyone, Williams was shown a straight red card! Despite the protests, the referee refused to overturn his clearly incorrect decision.
With Mountain rattled, yet still looking to retake the lead, Overton capitalised when a Mountain corner broke down, counter attacking and finding the net. With a couple of minutes remaining, Aled Reece was pulled to the ground by an Overton defender, but once again the referee did not give the correct decision. Compounding this, Overton grabbed a late third goal to complete their victory.
Next up, a week off for Mountain before we welcome Denbigh Town to Pant Newydd in the second round of the FAW Trophy on the 14th September
