Mountain End Season In Style

Robert Moore21 May 2019 - 14:55

Two goals apiece from Jack Aitken and Jimmy McGlone secure a final three points for Flint Mountain and ensure the club end the league season unbeaten

A season full of success finally drew to a close this weekend, as Flint Mountain welcomed Penyffordd Lions to the Northop Hall Pavilion in the last game of the league season. The two sides met just last week in the final of the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy, with Flint Mountain coming away with the cup after a resounding 6-1 win. Manager Rob Marshall made a few changes from the midweek win over Brymbo Victoria, with Kirk Russell, Dylan Roberts, David Walkiewicz and Jimmy McGlone all available again, whilst Keiran Farr returned to the line up after serving out his three match suspension after his sending off in the Horace Wynne Cup Final.

Despite starting the better side, the league champions fell behind to their opponents on the quarter hour mark. With Penyffordd on the attck, Dylan Roberts' attempted clearance was hit straight at the Penyffordd striker. The ball then looped up and over Kirk Russell, leaving him stranded. The goal did not take Mountain out of their stride, as they equalised just four minutes later. Down the left, David Walkiewicz delivered a low cross into the six yard box. The ball struck Jack Aitken and crept over the line. The young striker didn't know too much about it!

On the half hour, Mountain had taken the lead. On the edge of the penalty area, Jimmy McGlone saw his initial effort blocked, but got a second bite at the cherry, firing low into the bottom corner. Just before half time, the Mountain increased their lead. David Walkiewicz stood over a free kick on the right, and fired the ball into a dangerous area. Joey Davies attacked the ball and just got his head to it, glancing it beyond the goalkeeper and into the net.

In the second half, Mountain continued their charge for more goals and were awarded a penalty when Jimmy McGlone was brought down. McGlone picked himself up, dusting himself off before taking the spot kick and sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to increase the lead and make it comfortable. The final goal of the game come with twenty minutes to go. Mountain played a series of neat passes outside the Penyffordd penalty area. The ball eventually found Jack Aitken, who stroked the ball into the bottom corner. Despite pressing for more goals, the crossbar and the Penyffordd goalkeeper kept the scoreline at 5-1, as Flint Mountain closed out the season with an unbeaten league record.
