Messham Magic Sinks Brymbo

Robert Moore9 May 2019 - 18:15

A Lee Messham hat trick and Pete Martin header secure all three points for Flint Mountain on a gloomy evening in Brymbo

After Flint Mountain completed their run of cup finals, two final league games this week would finally end what has been a fantastic season for the league champions and quadruple winners. First up, Mountain were on the road for the final time, with a trip to mid table Brymbo Victoria. The recent run of games had taken it's toll, with Mountain forced to make several changes to the team, with Damon Griffiths given a first start since October, whilst Dylan Evans, Alex Millington and Ryan Roberts also returned to the starting line-up.

The Mountain started slowly, but were still able to take the lead after fifteen minutes. Alex Millington initially cleared a Brymbo corner and started a counter attack. Millington slid the ball through to Sean Williams, who got into the penalty area before pulling the ball back to Lee Messham. The ball was straight into the path of Messham, who was able to stroke the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net. the lead was quickly doubled just three minutes later, as Mountain looked in complete control. From a corner of their own, Sean Williams swung in the ball to the back post, where Pete Martin, leapt highest and powered a header into the net.

Brymbo continued to press for goals of their own and were gifted an opportunity at the mid point of the half. Mountain defender Dylan Evans bundled Brymbo's striker to the ground and the referee awarded a penalty. Dusting himself off, the striker took the penalty himself and smashed the ball high past stand in goalkeeper Ryan Roberts. Ten minutes later, Brymbo were back level. Getting down the Mountain left, they got to the byline and crossed to a waiting striker, who tapped into the net.

In the second half, a shuffle allowed Pete Martin to push into midfield and he quickly made his mark. Winning back possession, Martin looked up and seeing Lee Messham, fed a perfect ball through the Brymbo defence to the Mountain striker. Messham then fired a low shot from twenty yards, under the goalkeeper and nestled into the bottom corner. Brymbo showed fight and should have equalised shortly afterwards, but with the goal gaping, they could only fire wide of the post. With twelve minutes to go, they did get their third goal. Taking advantage of slack defending, Mountain could not clear the ball and at the back post, Brymbo are able to scramble the ball over the line.

There was one last twist in the game, however, as two minutes later, the league champions retook the lead for the last time. Sean Williams picked up the ball into the Brymbo half, and found Jack Aitken down the left. Aitken delivered a cross to Lee Messham at the back post, who fired high past the goalkeeper to complete his hat trick. The victory could have been even sweeter, but Sean Williams saw a long range effort hit the post.

Next up, Flint Mountain draw their season to a close with their final league game against Penyffordd Lions. The Mountain comprehensively beat their opponents 6-1 in the recent Mike Beech Memorial Trophy final last weekend, and avoiding a defeat will see Flint Mountain complete the league season unbeaten, a feat only completed by a select few.
