Champions At Long Last

Despite a second half fight back, Flint Mountain put six past Connah's Quay Nomads U18s to secure all three points, and the North East Wales League title

Last week's disappointment was fresh in the minds of everyone at Flint Mountain this week, as they made the short trip to Connah's Quay to take on Nomads U18s. The two sides will face off just a week before they meet in the Horace Wynne Cup final. This week, however, a win would finally secure a maiden league title for The Mountain. Manager Rob Marshall made some changes from last week's draw, with Keiran Farr, Dylan Roberts, Alex Millington and Jon Edmonds all returning to the starting line up, whilst Dylan Evans and Mark Williams, who was forced off last week with an injury, dropped to the bench.

It was Nomads who started the brighter side, with Mountain still as sluggish as the week before. Despite this, Nomads could find a clear cut chance and it was the league leaders who opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour. As the ball looked to be going out for a throw in, Jack Aitken did well to keep the ball in play, finding Marc Gunther in the process. Gunther played a dangerous ball in-between the defence, but it looked as if the goalkeeper would make a routine clearance. Out of nowhere, Jon Edmonds raced through and got to the ball ahead of the goalkeeper, knocking it past him and into the net. The goal seemed to ignite Mountain, and just two minutes later they doubled the lead. Marc Gunther was again involved, as his initial low shot was saved by the goalkeeper. The ball fell back to Gunther, who squaring the ball to the waiting Lee Messham, who had the easy task of tapping into the net from close range.

As the half hour approached, Mountain added a third. From a long ball forward by Kirk Russell, Jon Edmonds sublimely controlled the ball, before beating a defender and sliding the ball into the path of Marc Gunther. Once behind the defence, Gunther calmly stroked the ball into the bottom corner. In the second half, Mountain's dominance continued, as they pressed for further goals. On the hour mark, Jack Aitken was fouled by a Nomads defender from a corner, and the referee pointed to the spot. Stand in captain Sean Williams stepped up to take the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Mountain a fourth goal.

Nomads continued to fight and grabbed themselves a goal of their own. After the ball was seemingly cleared from danger, it was helped back into the penalty area. The Mountain defence went to sleep, allowing a Nomads player to turn the ball into the net. As quickly as they scored that, they had a second. After Kirk Russell had made a save to deny them, the ball fell kindly to a Nomads player, and they tapped in. With fifteen minutes to play, Nomads made things interesting, with a third goal. Dylan Roberts tried to be too cute and play out of defence, but his ball was lost and in an attempt to win it back, Pete Martin brought down his man in the box, with the referee awarding the home team a penalty. Despite choosing the right way, Kirk Russell could not make the save.

With ten minutes to play, Pete Martin made amends for giving away the penalty, settling the nerves and getting Mountain's fifth goal. From a corner, Martin rose above the defence, nodding into the net to score his first goal for the club. With seconds remaining of the game, the ball was launched forward towards the corner, as Mountain looked to see the game out. Marc Gunther had other ideas, however. He kept the ball in play, before beating his marker on the Nomads byline and passing across goal to an unmarked Jack Aitken, who turned the ball into the net against his former club to settle the game and the league!

The win sees Flint Mountain crowned North East Wales League champions for the first time, who two games to play. The celebrations will not be for long, though, as the two sides meet again on Friday in the Horace Wynne Cup final at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium, home of Airbus. The Mountain will hope for a similar result, as they press for a third trophy of a possible five. We hope to see you there.
