Last week, the club ended it's seven year wait for a trophy after overcoming Mold Town United on penalties. This week, the two sides met again in a crunch clash, with both sides still in the hunt for the North East Wales League title. A win for the home side would see The Mountain lift the trophy for the first time. Manager Rob Marshall made some changes to the cup winning line-up, with Dylan Roberts, Keiran Farr and Liam Mortimer all receiving a rest and a place on the subs' bench, whilst Dylan Evans, Joey Davies, Jimmy McGlone and Lee Messham all returned to the starting line up.
As with the previous meeting between the sides last week, the game did not live up to the hype of the league's top two sides, with Mold largely frustrating the home side in their attempts to open the scoring. The deadlock, however, was eventually broken after 38 minutes. Mark Williams picked up the ball short from Kirk Russell. Williams looked up, seeing Marc Gunther in space on the left, and fired the ball to him. Gunther cut inside and lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper. With the ball destined for the net, a Mold defender turned the ball into his own net.
In the second half, Flint Mountain tried in vain to grab a second goal, but were unable to muster any clear cut chances on goal. With ten minutes to go, Mold dealt the Mountain a sucker punch, with an equaliser. With a ball played forward towards goal, the Mold striker beat the Mountain defence, but goalkeeper Kirk Russell looked to have cleared the danger. However, Russell missed the ball, allowing the Mold striker to simply stride past him and tap the ball into the empty net.
Despite vain attempts in the final minutes, it was actually Mold who looked to press for a winner, with the final whistle signalling a draw as the fair result. Next up, Flint Mountain will have another attempt to win the league title on Good Friday, as they make the short journey to Connah's Quay, to take on the Nomads U18s. We hope to see you there, as we finally look to secure a first ever league title.
