Mountain Down Young Wingmakers

Robert Moore1 Apr 2019 - 14:51

A Jimmy McGlone header is sandwiched by a Sean Williams hat trick, as Flint Mountain return from Broughton with all three points

After reaching the final of the Horace Wynne Cup last weekend, with a 3-1 win over Airbus Academy, the hosting duties were reversed this week as the Young Wingmakers welcomed the Mountain to the Hollingsworth Group Stadium. Manager Rob Marshall rewarded Jimmy McGlone after his brace last weekend with a start, whilst Pete Martin returned after being cup tied. Dean Hughes was required to fill in between the sticks, after regular goalkeeper Kirk Russell was ruled out following a demon possession!

Flint Mountain flew out of the traps and were ahead after just five minutes. From an Airbus corner, the ball was cleared to Mountain striker Jon Edmonds, who drove forward on the counterattack. After getting past two defenders, he played the ball into the path of stand-in captain Sean Williams, who smashed the ball past the goalkeeper to open the scoring. The Mountain continued to threaten in the opening part of the game and were rewarded with a second goal on thirteen minutes. Jon Edmonds was again the creator, as he skilfully beat his marker on the left, before delivering a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Arriving in front of goal was Jimmy McGlone, who then headed past the goalkeeper at close range.

Airbus grew into the game as the half went on, but they could only muster a couple of free kicks that didn't really threaten, whilst a header from a corner narrowly missed the bottom corner. In the second half, the game's intensity dropped as Mountain were easily able to cope with the home side. It wasn't until fifteen minutes before the end, that Mountain extended their lead. Sean Williams whipped a ball into the penalty area. Under no pressure, the Airbus defender skewed his headed clearance, which flew over his own goalkeeper and into his own net.

With time running out, Flint Mountain cemented the three points with a quickfire double. After winning possession, Sean Williams fed Marc Gunther, who was through on goal. Gunther's low shot was well saved by the onrushing goalkeeper, but the ball rebounded to Williams, who lobbed the ball into the empty net. Williams was not done, as he capitalised on sloppy play by the Airbus defence, to nip in and easily slot past the goalkeeper to complete his hat trick.

With almost the last kick of the game, Airbus were able to grab a consolation goal. From thirty five yards, Airbus fired a speculative shot, which clipped the heel of Liam Mortimer as he attempted to block the shot. The ball looped up into the air and over Dean Hughes into the net. Despite this, The Mountain were able to record another win and pick up another priceless three points in their hunt for the North East Wales League title.

Next weekend, Flint Mountain face their first cup final this season, as the face off against Mold Town United for the Queensferry Sports President's Cup. The Mountain were runners up in the competition back in 2015, and will be hoping to go one step further this time around.
