After securing a place in the final of the President's Cup last weekend, Flint Mountain could finally look forward to returning to league action, and the visit of bottom club Bellevue to the Pavilion. Despite not playing in the league since December, the Mountain remain top of the table, and looks to extend the lead. Manager Rob Marshall allowed players with injuries to rest ahead of next week's semi final, so Alex Millington returned to the starting line up, whilst there was also a first club start for Pete Martin.
The warning signs were there to see very early into the game, the Mountain struck the post inside the first minute. After three minutes, they opened the scoring thanks to Lee Messham. Kirk Russell launched the ball forward, before the it was then headed on by Liam Mortimer into the path of Messham. Messham controlled the ball, beat the Bellevue defence for pace, then slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Messham doubled the lead. This time, Pete Martin fired the ball over the defence and Messham again beat the defence and scored an almost carbon copy of his opening strike.
The clock had only just rolled into double figures when Lee Messham had completed his hat trick. This time, Messham fired a shot which hit the inside of the post of the way into the back of the net. Messham then picked up his fourth of the game, finding the bottom corner with a low shot past the goalkeeper. The Bellevue defence just could not cope with the pace of the Mountain forward line, and a fifth goal soon followed. Lee Messham turned provider this time, delivering a dangerous cross across the six yard box. With Marc Gunther waiting to tap in at the back post, a Bellevue defender could only turn the ball into his own net.
It was then the turn of Marc Gunther to start his scoring. After Jack Aitken had raced through on goal, his shot was well saved by the Bellevue goalkeeper. The ball bounced loose at the edge of the penalty area, where Gunther was on hand to hit an overhead kick over the stranded goalkeeper and into the empty net. Jack Aitken was not to be denied his own goal a couple of minutes later. Aitken skilfully turned his marker inside out, before firing low into the bottom corner.
Just a minute later, Lee Messham added his fifth and Flint Mountain's eighth goal inside the half hour, as he picked up the ball in the penalty area and smashed the ball past the goalkeeper at his near post. The onslaught continued and Marc Gunther capitalised on a rebound, as the Bellevue goalkeeper's save well kindly to the striker, and he simply tapped into the net. Gunther was then able to complete his own hat trick. As the goalkeeper tried to shepherd the ball out, he lost the ball to Gunther, who was left with an open goal.
In the second half, the game seemed to drop into a lull, so a triple change was made by manager Rob Marshall. David Walkiewicz, Jon Edmonds and Dylan Evans were all introduced, and the former made an immediate impact. Walkiewicz beat the right back for pace, then delivered a pinpoint cross to Marc Gunther at the far post, and the striker connected with a diving head into the net. Moments later, Gunther got his fifth goal, as he cheekily lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper from close range. Substitute Jon Edmonds then got in on the act, as he collected a cross from David Walkiewicz and slid the ball into the back of the net.
With time running out, their seemed to be no end to the goals. Jon Edmonds raced through and saw his shot well saved, but he was able to cross over to a grateful Marc Gunther to nod into the net. Liam Mortimer then managed to pick up his first goal of the season, as he hooked a hopeful ball into the penalty area, which looped high and into the far top corner, in a complete fluke. The midfielder didn't seem to mind, however. In the final ten minutes, Marc Gunther again got past a tired defence and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way. It was then Jon Edmonds who bagged himself a brace. The striker, rounded the goalkeeper and tapped into the net. In the final two minutes, Marc Gunther completed the scoring, as he fired a vicious shot across goal and into the bottom corner.
That win secured a record score for Flint Mountain, having surpassed the 14-0 record set earlier in the season, set against the same opposition. The win sees Flint Mountain maintain the three point gap to Mold Town United, who also won on Saturday. It does increase the lead to seven points over third placed Acton, who were in Premier Cup action against Penyffordd Lions. Their extra time win means that Acton will face the Mountain in the final of the Premier Cup, with the details to be confirmed soon.
Next week, Flint Mountain aim for a third final, as they welcome Brymbo Victoria to the Pavilion in the semi-final of the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy. We hope to see you there.
