Substitute Messham Secures Mountain Win

Robert Moore14 Sep 2018 - 15:30

Two late goals from substitute Lee Messham and a first Mountain goal from Dean Hughes give Flint Mountain a win over Mold Town United at The Rec

After victory over Caerwys last week saw us leapfrog our opponents into second place in the league, Flint Mountain were looking to continue the momentum with another win, but faced a tricky short trip to take on Mold Town United United at The Rec. With Kirk Russell able to return to take the gloves in the Flint Mountain goal, Dean Hughes moved into his more familiar central midfield role, whilst Mark Williams also returned from injury for his first start in a month.

The first half was a tight affair, with neither side carving out any real chances. It was just after the half hour mark that Flint Mountain took the lead, courtesy of Dean Hughes. Jon Edmonds was the provider, as he fired a low cross into the penalty area, where Dean Hughes was on hand to smash the ball high into the net for his first Flint Mountain goal from six yards out.

It wasn't until late in the second half that the game really come alive. With twelve minutes remaining, Lee Messham, on as a second half substitute, stooped low to head a cross into the net, his first ever headed goal! Just a minute later, however, Mold reduced their deficit from a set piece. After working the ball forward to earn a corner, the ball was floated into the Mountain penalty area. The defence could not clear the ball and a Mold player was on hand to find the bottom corner.

Flint Mountain responded and restored their two-goal advantage, thanks to Messham. With the ball played into the danger area, the Mold defender inexplicably left the ball, hoping his goalkeeper would collect comfortably. The defender failed to see Messham lurking behind him and he took full advantage, controlling the ball before firing low into the net. Mountain were then able to hold on and secure all three points.

Next up, Flint Mountain return to the Pavilion, where we will welcome Airbus Academy on Saturday 15th. Airbus got the better of the Mountain in all of our clashes last season, including a 6-1 drubbing in the Premier Cup semi final, so the team will certainly be looking to earn a measure of payback. We hope you can join us and show your support.
