Mountain Scrape Undeserved Point

A Sean Williams goal two minutes from time rescues a point for Flint Mountain at home to Connah's Quay Nomads U18s

After beginning the season with a stuttering win over Brymbo Victoria on the opening weekend, Flint Mountain were quickly back in action in midweek, where we welcomed Connah's Quay Nomads U18s to the Pavilion. With Mark Williams picking up an injury and Joey Davies unavailable, there were starts for Liam Mortimer and Leon Pickford in defence, whilst Jimmy McGlone made his first start of the season in attack.

The Mountain got off to the perfect start, as they took the lead after just five minutes. Picking up the ball from a poor clearance, Jimmy McGlone drove forward, before playing the ball to strike partner Jon Edmonds, who stabbed the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net, from the edge of the penalty area. Nomads then started to look threatening coming forward, and had a series of chances of the course of the half, only to be denied by the outstanding Kirk Russell in the Mountain goal, who made a series of fantastic saves to prevent an equaliser.

Nomads were not to be denied, however, and got a deserved equaliser just a minute before the half time whistle. After picking up a through ball past the Mountain defence, the Nomads player cooly lifted the ball over Russell and into the net. at half time, manager Rob Marshall made a change, bringing off Dean Hughes and bringing on Dylan Roberts. In the second half, Mountain retook control of the play and pressed forward to retake the lead. The best chance fell to Jon Edmonds, who was only denied by the bottom of the post.

After weathering the storm, it was the Nomads who then took the lead with twenty minutes remaining. From a corner, the ball was floated the back post, where an unmarked Nomads player found the bottom corner, despite a man being on the post. Mountain to rally and rescue something from the ball, with Dylan Evans and Rob Rush both being introduced. It was not until just two minutes from time that Mountain equalised. With Mountain piling on the pressure on goal, the ball found Sean Williams at the back post and he made no mistake from close range. Whilst a welcome sight, the goal was very harsh on the young Nomads side, who deserved more than a point.

Next up for Flint Mountain is a first league away trip of the season, where we travel to Wrexham to take on Bellevue. Despite comfortably winning both game last season, this time the game should prove to be a much tougher affair, with Bellevue playing well so far, and picking up their first EVER win last weekend. With this in mind, they will surely be buoyed by this and looking for more points.
