Mold No Match For Mountain

Robert Moore29 Apr 2018 - 10:23

Goals from Jack Aitken, Sean Wilkes (2), Damon Griffiths, Phil Marshall and Mark Williams give Flint Mountain the win and another vital three points at the Northop Hall Pavilion

After the midweek victory over Caerwys lifted the spirits around the club, Flint Mountain were full of confidence as they looked towards welcoming Mold Town United to the Northop Hall Pavilion. There were starts for Alex Millington, Jimmy McGlone, Jack Aitken and Joey Davies, who returned to the line up after recent absences, whilst there was a debut for Kirk Russell, who made the switch from Halkyn United last month, in the Flint Mountain goal.

Flint Mountain immediately got onto the front foot as they pressed for an early advantage. The initial few minutes did not bring much, as Mold were able to withstand the Mountain attacks, before Jack Aitken opened the scoring after fourteen minutes. Alex Millington picked up the ball before playing a lovely lofted ball over the Mold defence to Jack Aitken, who got past his man before hitting a low effort into the net from a tight angle.

Despite being in control of the game, Mountain seemed to let their levels drop, and Mold tried to capitalise with a spell of their own. They could well have been level, if not for the awareness of debutant Kirk Russell. Firstly, Russell made a lovely diving save to his left, to tip the ball around the post, before saving well at close range after the Mold player got through one on one. After riding their luck, Mountain then dealt a hammer blow to Mold, as they went back up the pitch and doubled their lead. From a corner, the ball was first helped on, before Mountain captain Damon Griffiths headed home at the near post.

In the second half, Mountain kept up their momentum and it wasn't long until the third goal arrived. The ball was chipped forward towards Jack Aitken, who headed the ball into the path of Sean Wilkes. Wilkes composed himself before beating the goalkeeper at close range, scoring in his fourth consecutive game. Shortly afterwards, Wilkes then added to his tally with Flint Mountain's fourth goal. Left back Dylan Evans burst forward with the ball, beating three Mold players, before sliding the ball to Wilkes. The striker then chipped the ball over the helpless goalkeeper and into the net.

Mountain continued to press for further goals and with fifteen minutes remaining, they added their fifth goal, thanks to substitute Phil Marshall. Out on the left, the ball was played to Marshall in plenty of space. He turned and drove into the penalty area, before sliding the ball under the goalkeeper and into the net. There was still time for a sixth goal, which come courtesy of Mark Williams, four minutes from time. From a corner, the ball eventually reached Williams at the back post, where he controlled the ball and then lashed it into the net.

Next up for Flint Mountain is the midweek visit of Mostyn Dragons to the Northop Hall Pavilion, on Thursday evening. Mountain will be looking to add to their recent form with another win. We hope to see you there.
