Mostyn Hold Firm To Deny Mountain

Robert Moore13 Nov 2017 - 18:34

A first half goal from Jack Aitken and second half penalty from Colin Davies are not enough to secure victory as Mostyn earn a deserved draw

Fresh from last week's impressive victory over Acton, Flint Mountain made the short trip down the North Wales coast to take on Mostyn Dragons. Mountain were boosted by the return of Lee Beck to lead the line after suspension forced him to miss last week's game, with Joey Davies making his first start for the club against one of his former sides.

Neither side were able to carve out a clear cut opportunity, until Jack Aitken popped up and fired in another goal. After picking up a pass from Jake Williams, Aitken turned and fired a short from the edge of the penalty area, which flew over the Mostyn goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Despite a couple of other decent chances, Flint Mountain were unable to find another goal, and just before half time, were punished by Mostyn who scored an equaliser. After the ball was not cleared from a free kick, the ball was whipped in and the Mostyn player rose high unmarked to head past the Ryan Roberts.

The second half started in controversy, as both teams were awarded dubious penalties within just minutes of each other. Firstly, Mostyn were awarded a penalty after a seemingly innocuous coming together of Colin Davies and the Mostyn player, as they challenged for the ball. The Mostyn striker then stepped up and despite Ryan Roberts getting a hand on the ball, found the back of the net. Just two minutes later, Flint Mountain were awarded a penalty of their own. Ricky Bennett, on as a second half substitute, was tripped inside the penalty area, but the decision did seem harsh on the home team. Colin Davies, who moments earlier had the penalty awarded against him, stepped up confidently to send the Mostyn goalkeeper the wrong way, scoring his first goal for the club in only his second game.

Both teams tried their best to find a winner and both had chances which went begging. Firstly, Jake Williams did well to burst into the penalty area, only for his effort to go wide, before a Mostyn player, unmarked, hit the post from close range, with the ball somehow bouncing out and into the hands of a grateful Ryan Roberts. In all, a draw seemed a fair result.

Next up for Flint Mountain is one to watch, as they face off against league leaders and rivals, Halkyn United. Flint Mountain were victorious in the previous meeting on the opening day, sealing a 4-2 win at the Northop Hall Pavilion, and both teams will be desperate to get a result. Kick off in Halkyn is 14:00.
