Mountain Sweep Aside Youngsters

Robert Moore10 Oct 2017 - 14:41

Goals from Jack Aitken and Sean Wilkes ensure Flint Mountain leapfrog Connah's Quay Nomads U18s in the North East Wales League

After two frustrating weekends were unceremoniously cancelled, following issues with Marchwiel Villa, Flint Mountain were looking forward to welcoming Connah's Quay Nomads U18s to the Northop Hall Pavilion, in a battle between third and fourth in the league. Making his debut was Lee Beck, recently transferred from Flint Town United Reserves, whilst Ryan Roberts and Sean Wilkes also returned to the starting line up.

Flint Mountain started the much better team against their young opponents and pressed for an early opener. Nomads tried their best withstand the attacks but with sixteen minutes gone, Flint Mountain did open the scoring. After forcing a corner, Keiran Farr delivered the ball onto the head of Jack Aitken, whose glancing header towards goal somehow evaded the defenders and found the back of the net. Aitken was cleared delighted to have scored against his former club.

The barrage of attacks continued, with Nomads giving away several fouls, some of which were last ditch, to prevent players getting through one on one. Despite this, Flint Mountain increased their lead just before the half an hour mark. Keiran Farr scuffed free kick found Sean Wilkes at the front post, who managed to flick the ball past the goalkeeper. Nomads had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the game before half time, as he made a couple of good saves to deny Mountain further goals.

In the second half, Nomads rarely give Mountain any issues, with a solitary effort easily gathered by Ryan Roberts in the Flint Mountain goal. The Mountain continued to press for further goals, with the Nomads goalkeeper making another good save to deny Lee Back a debut goal. In the end, the second half proved comfortable for Flint Mountain, who secured all three points to move them ahead of their opponents in the league standings.

Next up for Flint Mountain is the first round of the Queensferry Sports President's Cup, with Offa Athletic the opponents. Flint Mountain have a poor recent record against the Gresford based side, and will be looking to change this with victory on Saturday.
