Following on from Tuesday evening's victory over Aston Park Rangers, Flint Mountain were quickly back in action against newly reformed Mostyn Dragons. Manager Rob Thelwell looked to keep consistency with the side, but was forced into two changes. With Jake Williams unavailable, Richie Hughes returned to the side, moving Scott Forrester to right back, whilst Karl Leighton made his first start of the season, in place of Rob Rush.
In the pouring rain, Flint Mountain started poorly and despite Jimmy McGlone firing wide of the post, gifted an early goal to Mostyn. After a defensive mix up between Matty Howard and Karl Leighton, Howard committed a foul outside the penalty area. From the resulting free kick, the Mostyn striker smashed the ball past Lee Evans and into the top corner. Mountain could still not get a hold of the game and had Evans to thank after he managed to tip the ball onto the cross bar and out for a corner. It took The Mountain over half an hour to finally start playing and passing with the required intensity and desire, and got back into the game from the penalty spot. After Tom Heppleston was brought down, Jimmy McGlone stepped up and fired into the bottom right corner.
With half time fast approaching, Flint Mountain should have taken the lead, but for the heroics of the Mostyn goalkeeper pulling off a triple save to deny them. Richie Hughes did ensure that the side did take the lead just before half time. With the ball played back to Tom Heppleston, he whipped the ball into the area, where Hughes powered a low headed effort into the bottom corner. Flint Mountain could consider themselves very fortunate to have the lead at the break.
In the second half, the change compared to the first half was immediate as Flint Mountain began pressing for a third goal. Lee Messham, who replaced Ricky Bennett at the break, could not quite reach the ball as it ran through on goal, before Jimmy McGlone clattered the goalkeeper in an attempt to get a toe on the ball. On the hour mark, Flint Mountain grabbed a third goal. Chris Layne delivered a perfect ball into the area, where Alex Millington did well to direct his headed effort into the bottom corner.
Flint Mountain freshened up the side as they looked to see out the game, introducing Ryan Jones and debutant Ian Jones for Karl Leighton and Tom Heppleston. With time running out and having squandered several chances to increase their lead, Flint Mountain grabbed their fourth and final goal through Jimmy McGlone. Having picked up the ball on the edge of the area, McGlone knocked the ball past his marker before firing a vicious shot across goal and into the net.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a trip to Brymbo to face another new league side, Tanyfron United, on Saturday. Tanyfron currently sit bottom of the pile with just one point so far and The Mountain will look to increase the pressure on the new side.
