After a disappointing result last week, which seen Flint Mountain fall to a heavy defeat at the hands of Mynydd Isa, attention turned to another tough test in the shape of Aston Park Rangers. Mountain welcomed Lee Evans back in goal, whilst Ricky Bennett moved into midfield.
The game took some time to really get started and the first real chance of the half fell to Chris Layne, who after getting space on the right, fired a low shot across goal and past the post. Early in the half, Mountain were forced into a change which saw Karl Leighton replace Jake Williams due to an injury. Midway through the half, Jimmy McGlone raced onto a long ball forward by Evans in goal, but as the defender turned to block his run, he blatantly handled the ball, in an incident which was missed by the referee.
With just six minutes of the half remaining, Mountain found their opening goal. After earlier spurning a headed effort on an open goal, defender Matty Howard grabbed his second of the season. A corner was cleared to the edge of the penalty area and when Chris Layne helped it back in, Howard was on hand to nod past the goalkeeper and into the corner.
In the second half, Mountain quickly doubled their lead to put pressure on Aston. From a free kick at least 35 yards from goal, midfielder Scott Forrester lined up a speculative, long range effort, which the Aston keeper could only parry into the net. Mountain continued to press for a third goal and Ricky Bennett was unlucky not to score, as he could only get a toe to a cross into the area. With time running out, Mountain should have confirmed their victory, but first Ryan Jones, on as a second half substitute, saw a point blank header well saved, before Jimmy McGlone rounded the goalkeeper, only for his effort to be cleared by the defender.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a trip to face newly reformed side, Mostyn Dragons at Maes Pennant. Mountain will be looking to build upon this result as the midweek games come to an end.
