Mountain Crushed By Spartans

Mountain Crushed By Spartans

Robert Moore28 Aug 2016 - 10:25

A last minute penalty is merely a consolation as Flint Mountain are well beaten by Mynydd Isa Spartans at the Argoed

Fresh from the final minute heroics of Saturday, Flint Mountain looked forward to another local away trip, where Mynydd Isa Spartans welcomed them. The Mountain were once again forced into changes due to working commitments. In goal, Ricky Bennett was back betwwen the sticks in place of Ryan Roberts, whilst Tom Heppleston, Jake Williams and Chris Layne all returned to the starting line up.

In the opening few minutes of the match, Flint Mountain started well and could well have been ahead early, but were dealt a sucker punch when the Spartans opened the scoring with their first attack. After breaking up a Mountain attack, they counter attacked down the right, before delivering a cross which was headed home by former Flint Mountain striker, Nathan Eccleson. Mynydd Isa quickly doubled their lead from a free kick, capitalising on poor Flint Mountain marking with a simple finish, after the ball had hit the cross bar.

Despite the scoreline, Flint Mountain continued to attack and should have got a goal back, but for the superb Mynydd Isa goalkeeper, who made a fabulous double save to deny Lee Messham. Just when Flint Mountain were pressing for a goal, Mynydd Isa once again grabbed a goal to dent the confidence of Flint Mountain, just before half time. The Spartans striker was able to run directly through the heart of the Mountain defence, chasing a long ball forward, before firing a thunderous shot past Ricky Bennett. Things then turned from bad to worse, as Rob Rush was forced off with a groin injury, to be replaced by Alex Millington.

In the second half, Flint Mountain only had themselves to blame, as their mistakes proved costly. Early in the half, Tom Heppleston was forced back by the Spartans to the edge of the Mountain penalty area. Ricky Bennett then made a rash decision to come out of his goal to close down the play, but the Spartans won the ball and cooly lifted the ball over Bennett and into the net. After this goal, the spirits of the Mountain players were broken and their play turned sloppy. Spartans then converted their easiest opportunity, as Ricky Bennett raced out of his goal to clear a through ball, only to miss the ball completely and leave the Spartans player with a simple tap in.

With time running out, Spartans were then gifted their sixth goal. After collecting the ball, Bennett rolled it out to Scott Forrester, who mis-controlled, allowing the Spartans striker to score another simple finish into the corner. With just moments of the game remaining, Flint Mountain did grab a consolation from the penalty spot. After being brought down himself, Mountain striker Jimmy McGlone, picked himself up, before sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to grab his fourth of the season.

Next up for Flint Mountain, we welcome Aston Park Rangers to Wat's Dyke Way on Tuesday evening. The Mountain will certainly be looking for a response to this crushing defeat.
